I have been a Chinese language tutor for more than 20 years. My teaching theory is to learn Chinese in a systematic way. I have written a textbook for students with no prior background in Chinese Language. I use pictures and hints to help students to memorize Chinese characters. It is the first program in the world to learn Chinese in sequence.
Learning Chinese conversation seems very easy to western language speaking people because the learning category only involves the sound of the pinyin. However, the real Chinese learning is reading the meaning out of all characters. It represents a precious culture of an ancient nation.
In reality, without a learning sequence, a Chinese language learner will spend more time to digest the learning material, and even give up learning.
Many approaches begin with commonly used words: colors, body parts, fruits and animals. Such approaches often frustrate students without any Chinese background because many commonly used characters have many strokes and there is no logical connection in the appearance of the characters. Before they get to the point when the similarities and structures start to make sense, many non-Chinese students have already given up, thinking Chinese is too difficult.
By arranging the character learning sequence to begin with more basic characters, students immediately begin building a foundation. It makes students feel it is easy to learn Chinese as a foreign language. The learning time for each lesson is around two to four hours, depending on how quickly the individual student can digest the materials. The character memory hints are designed to help students memorize the characters and their meanings through direct descriptions and visual pictures in a simple way. Some of them express the absorbed etymology resource through the little visual pictures in order to help students to understand the meaning.
All my students enjoy Chinese learning because they can know exactly how many characters they have learned, and which words were difficult to understand. Since the learning is in sequence, the students have more confidence in learning a second language.
I am fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese, English, and have basic knowledge of Japanese. I have been a Chinese Language Teacher for more than 15 years in North America and Asia to both Chinese heritage (including Mandarin and Cantonese) and Non-Chinese heritage learners. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
