My name is Alaine K. and was only tutored once in my life. In high school I struggled with math and tried tutoring. It worked for me. Tutoring helped me realize that I had to try a lot harder than I had been to succeed in math. My tutor wasn't just some random person, though. Throughout the course of my tutoring we actually became good friends. I hope to establish a relationship with the students I tutor and let them know I care about them and their success in whatever subject they may be struggling in because that's what I wanted from my tutor. The reason I wanted to become a tutor is to motivate students. Although I am an English major, there was a time when I disliked the subject. I was a very slow reader in elementary and middle school and so I didn't like reading of any kind. I finally found an author I liked and still like that made me love reading. Since then I've fallen in love with writing as well. Building relationships is an important part of tutoring but so are the tutoring methods.
Like math, English is a very complex subject and can be harder to grasp for some people than for others. If a student isn't grasping the subject it shows in their work, so I find it best to first assess their strengths and reaffirm them in those strengths. Through looking at their work I will also be able to see what the student needs help with. I then will help them correct the work they've done if needed because I believe it helps their self-esteem. If a student has red marks all over homework they usually feel down about the subject and giving them an opportunity to correct those errors builds confidence and helps them soak in the material better. This can be done with homework, tests, quizzes, and written papers. Then the process for working on the homework they haven't done begins. I will ask the student questions to find out the level of understanding they have of the subject and ask the student if he or she has any questions they want to ask me. As problems arise I work with the student to solve them without just giving them the answers. Sometimes the student just needs the material presented in a new way or further simplified. Once the information is processed the student and I can build upon that basic knowledge by learning to apply it to his or her homework or subject in general.
Where experience is concerned, I have helped other students and friends with homework and proofreading assignments and written papers. It helped me gain practical hands-on experience with working with others to help them succeed. I have a passion for this and want to help students succeed in and understand the subject they are struggling with. My goal is to build a relationship with the student so that he or she can trust me to help. My name is Alaine K. and was only tutored once in my life. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to tutor in Bible Studies because I went to a Christian school from kindergarten to 12th grade, and I am currently going to a Christian university. I have been taught and continue to be taught by very intelligent and caring teachers and professors who have given me a great deal of knowledge and insight about the Bible and Jesus. I have taken courses about the Old and New Testament, as well as courses about applying what I've learned and being able to defend my faith.
I am a sophomore in college, majoring in English with an emphasis in writing. It is a subject that I am passionate about. I've taken multiple courses in various aspects of English, so I am prepared to help others understand this subject better.
As an English major with an emphasis in writing, grammar is something I have come to understand well. Understanding it is necessary for reading and writing. Having done a great deal of both these things, I am qualified to help others understand grammar better as well.
Reading is something I enjoy very much and it is very important to everyday life. Having taken college courses for literature specifically, I have gained an even better appreciation and understanding of the subject. Literature covers a wide range of types of writing that can be confusing to read and understand. I have read a variety of writing and can help people who are having trouble understanding this subject.
As an English major with an emphasis in writing, proofreading is something I've grown accustomed to doing very often. I have become good at picking out the finer details of what should be changed for a paper to flow better. I have not only proofread my own papers, but those of fellow students as well. I can give feedback, reassurance, and guidance to students who need help with any type of written assignment, from poetry to persuasive essays.
Reading is something that I have done a lot of. I was a slow reader in elementary school, so this subject has become very important to me as I have grown and become proficient in it. Reading is easier for some than others, and I have taken many college courses that have required tough and confusing reading. I have adapted to reading different types of literature and can be helpful to students struggling with reading comprehension.
Spelling is something I have been good at since elementary school. I have helped others with spelling, and as an English major with an emphasis in writing, it is something that I have a lot of experience with. I can help students who are struggling with spelling because it does come easier to some than others.
I was on the varsity swim team in high school for all four years, and before that I was on a recreational team for five years. I coached swimming for four and five year old children on that recreational team as well. I also taught my brother how to swim, and he is now very good at it and is on a swim team. I have a lot of experience and I have taken first aid classes.
