I have been a teacher for over 25 years and I continue to enjoy what I do. It is very rewarding to teach students in a way they can understand so they feel more successful in their learning. It takes patience and respect to be a successful tutor as students need that extra help to build their confidence in learning the materials. I make learning fun as we set goals and objectives to accomplish this. Parents want their child to have success and a positive experience in school but sometimes a child needs more one on one which the teacher can't always provide. I remember helping students many times after class while waiting to be picked up by their parents. It never occurred to me that I should be getting paid for this extra service until it was brought to my attention by my fellow teachers. So I became a tutor through word of mouth for the past few years and would love to connect with more families. I enjoy helping students get a love for learning and thus set a solid foundation for the rest of their educational career.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught myself the ABC in ASL when I worked in Retail as I had many deaf customers. I became so fascinated by the 4th most used language that I went to Gallaudet College, which is now a University, in the 70's to become an interpreter. I became a teacher in the 80's and would introduce basic signs to my young students. I would have the ABC in sign language as a border and on their desks. I still practice using signs whenever I meet deaf people. I enjoy teaching the basics to children and they would then tell me that they spelled their names to a deaf person in a restaurant because they were confidence to show off their ASL skills. That is powerful learning and my love of teaching a new language to children. I have taught ASL teacher workshops through the NAEYC.
