I was born, raised and spent most of my life in Tokyo. I earned a B.A. in English from a university in Japan and I became interested in Second Language Acquisition while studying linguistics there. After I graduated from university, I worked for an international logistics firm for several years in Japan. Since I wanted to put myself outside of Japan to experience cultural differences and go back to school to get training for Teaching English as a Foreign Language certificate in the United States. After I completed the certificate course, I had a chance to teach Japanese as a teaching assistant at a University for one year, and this experience has brought out my passion for teaching the Japanese language. Teaching Japanese as a foreign language unveiled new avenues in my life. I found myself enthralled by the challenge of introducing students to my culture and teaching them my language, all with the perspective of a native. To fulfill my goal to teach Japanese at the university level, I have started working on an M.A. in Japanese Language and Pedagogy from the California State University.

I have total 2 years of teaching experience at universities in Southern California and I taught mainly introductory courses. Also, I have total 4 years of tutoring experience for all proficiency levels of college students and professionals. I support their performance in Japanese with individual accommodations in-person and via online applications. I proofread, edit, and provide constructive suggestions on students’ written pieces to make them realize their mistakes. I explain grammatical points that the students are struggling with and have them practice speaking and writing in a positive learning environment in order to motivate and build confidence.
Furthermore, I taught Japanese as a Heritage Language for 3rd and 4th grade students in elementary school in the U.S. at a Saturday School in Southern California. I developed hands-on class activities and materials adapted to the students’ proficiency, cognitive levels, and in
