Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I specialize in test preparation and peak performance in all sections of the ACT including the English and Writing Tests (essay). I have helped recent students increase their English scores by at least 10 points in the ACT scale by teaching proven ACT strategies, proper English grammar rules, and effective essay writing skills. As a published writer, I have adapted my writing techniques to fit the specific needs of high school students.

ADD/ADHD

Since 2009, I have privately tutored and coached over 20 students from grades 6-12 with diagnoses of ADD/ADHD to increase their grades and test performance. In 2007–2009, I was employed as a special education teacher's aide and adapted physical education aide with the Redondo Beach Unified School District. I worked with many of the students diagnosed with ADD/ADHD by facilitating their study skills and homework in multiple subjects in grades 5-8. I am in the process of earning certification in neurolinguistic programming and memory-emotional release methods which are clinically proven to help children and adults with ADD/ADHD.

Biology

I'm proficient with biology through the bio AP level. I've taken numerous lower- and upper-division biology courses in college and received an Academic Achievement award in 2009 for my straight A's in general biology.

Chemistry

Completed university-level general chemistry and was awarded the life sciences department achievement award at El Camino College. I have tutored high school AP chemistry and honors chemistry since 2007.

COOP/HSPT

Since 2010, I have helped numerous middle school students prepare for the HSPT and ISEE high school placement tests. I am proficient in teaching the effective test-taking strategies found in the most popular prep books. Those strategies are similar to the SAT strategies that I've taught since 2009. I assign students full practice tests to determine their areas of strength and weakness. These test results help determine our study plan.

English

B.A. in English from UCLA. I've proofread and edited essays, college application essays, and fiction for many students from grades 8 through college. I'm also a published short story writer and have written fiction, non-fiction, and screenplays since 1995.

Film

I have 12 years of film production experience, including writing and producing completed and distributed projects. My produced works include: a 10-episode narrative series, 21-part and 32-part educational series, commercials, music videos, and corporate videos. My recent production credits include: producer, line producer, writer. I have also taught workshops, educating aspiring filmmakers in pre-production and production techniques. At industry events, I have moderated discussion panels and have led panels about film techniques, distribution, and story development.

ISEE

Since 2010, I have tutored over 20 middle school students prepare for the ISEE high school placement test. I am proficient in teaching the effective test-taking strategies found in the most popular preparation books including Peterson's "Master the Catholic High School Entrance Exams." These strategies are similar to the SAT strategies that I've taught since 2009. I assign students full practice tests to determine their opportunities to improve and thereby refine our specific study plan for their needs.

Photography

I have over seven years of experience shooting photography with the following film and digital cameras: 35mm SLRs and DSLRs including Canon and Nikon; Hasselblad medium format (film). I worked as assistant photographer and freelance photographer in the South Bay region of Los Angeles county; my client work included portraits, weddings, special events, and products. In the entertainment industry, I have shot stills for a feature film and applied my photography background as a cinematographer where I oversaw grip, lighting, and camera departments on several short films. I am also highly experienced with Photoshop and have recently done portrait retouching for business clients.

PSAT

I've been trained in effective SAT strategies (which apply to the PSAT) through my years of experience with a major test prep company. I enjoy guiding 9th and 10th graders in these test-taking methods which also improve their vocabularies, fundamental math skills, reading speed, and English grammar.

SAT Math

I have coached students with test prep since 2008 and began teaching full SAT classes in 2009. To provide the most accurate problems available, I always use the Official College Board SAT Study Guide. Every problem type has a specific method and once students understand those methods, I often see a great boost in their confidence.

Video Production

I have been an experienced film production crew member since 1997. I have taught filmmakers pre-production, screenwriting, and production methods through CreatorUp.com workshops, seminars, and courses since 2012. I am the producer of award-winning film and video projects including documentaries, narratives, music videos, educational series, and commercials.
