My name is Colleen and I am currently going to school to become a teacher. I have a bachelor's degree in linguistics and am working on my master's degree in addition to my teaching credentials. I can help with most, if not all language problems a student might encounter. I can help with reading comprehension, writing skills, and also iron out any problems with grammar. I am proficient in Spanish and can help with any problems learning either Spanish or English as a second language. I love a good challenge so if a student is having a problem learning a certain way I make it my mission to find a new way to help them understand. I like to break problems down to their most basic components in order to ensure that all parts of a concept are fully understood before moving on to something harder. I have experience tutoring math but I excel when I am working with language. In addition to playing ice hockey, I enjoy studying languages in my free time. Welsh, German, and Spanish are the languages I enjoy studying most.
Hope to see you all soon! Hi, everyone!

Colleen has been teaching my nephew ESL for several weeks now, and his English has improved a lot! During each lesson, she sets aside a certain amount of time to go over each area of English my nephew has trouble with; she mainly works with him on reading comprehension, writing, and speaking. If my nephew does not understand something, she goes back to the very beginning to make sure he fully understands a word or concept before moving on. I feel like he is getting the most out of his lessons with her. She is always prepared, arrives on time, and can answer any questions my nephew asks her. I'd recommend her to anyone!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Algebra is one of the most important math classes, in my opinion. I have needed all of my algebra skills in every math class I have taken. Knowing how to solve for a variable in complex problems is a very good skill to have. Practice is the key to success in math, the more problems a student can do, the better off he or she will be.
I have had experience tutoring elementary math. It is extremely important to have a good basic math foundation before moving on to higher math classes such as pre-algebra, algebra, etc. I think that working through problems and using flashcards when needed are useful tools to help a child thoroughly understand the problems they are working on.
I have taken English classes all throughout high school and college. My major is Linguistics, which requires me to take multiple, advanced English grammar courses. The school has also required me to take various English composition courses.
I have tutored students learning English as a second language before. I have also taken college courses that have required me to break down English into its most basic components. I think that this can help my students learn English in a relatively easy and fun way. Breaking down everyday conversations, reading out loud, and using flashcards when needed are effective tools to help a student learn English, or any language for that matter.
During the Spring, 2013 school semester I took an advanced English grammar course. My final grade in this class was an A. We were required to know the rules of prescriptive grammar and how to apply them to complex sentences and passages.
I have taken years of math throughout high school and college ranging from basic math to Calculus. All of these classes required me to have strong basic math skills otherwise I would have struggled in the next course. I think it is very important to have a good foundation and practice makes perfect. The more a student correctly solves a certain type of problem, the more likely they will do well in the next class and on their exams.
I am constantly reading books during my free time and enjoy reading anything from fantasy novels to text books. I think a good way to improve reading comprehension is by having a student read out loud. This ensures that they are not only seeing the material, but they are hearing themselves say it as well. By doing this, the student is receiving the same information multiple times which will increase the overall understanding of what they are reading.
