I have over 15 years of experience tutoring elementary school students in math, science, language arts, and speech. I have studied child development and have acquired knowledge of teaching children from grades K-8. My professional experience includes working 17 years at an after school academy where I have developed a highly effective curriculum for writing and speech, as well as teaching language arts. I have tutored many students privately to prepare them for SAT and TOFL examinations.
My philosophy of education:
I believe that knowledge is much more than power; knowledge is enjoyment. Learning can be one of the most enjoyable experiences we have, and I impart my own love of learning onto my students so that they will continue to broaden their horizons long after they have left my instruction. Education promotes independence and a sense of accomplishment. It is one of the most powerful resources we have in that regard. Accordingly, it is one of the greatest reasons I love my work and acknowledge its importance.
My style of teaching is pedagogic. I try and find my students' greatest strengths and draw them out, while working to improve on areas where they are weaker. Wherever possible, particularly in science, I try to incorporate a hands-on learning experience by providing physical models and experiments.
I have always believed in the concept of optimal stress, wherein students are provided with a learning experience that challenges them to think for themselves without simply providing facts and answers, but without overwhelming them. Thus students learn to think and problem solve for themselves. I have over 15 years of experience tutoring elementary school students in math, science, language arts, and speech. I have
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught elementary school students at an after school program for seventeen years. I have written an effective writing curriculum for language arts students, as well as teaching a speech class for the last three years. I specialize in ESL students. I have tutored elementary students privately for the last fourteen years in subjects ranging from elementary math, science, social studies, reading comprehension, handwriting, phonics, and study skills.
I have tutored students in elementary math from subjects ranging from the four basic operations, basic geometry, pre-algebra, inequalities, reading and preparing graphs and charts, statistics, fractions and all their operations, probability, units of weights and measures, linear equations, and formulas and literal equations.
I have tutored elementary, high school, and college-level students in language arts for the past 17 years. This experience and my education has given me a good working knowledge of English and American literature in a wide variety of genres from poetry, to prose, to drama, and works of fiction. I am acquainted with the history of the English speaking world, so I have a good working knowledge of the events and personalities that shaped the authors of great works of literature.
I have studied public speaking extensively under a teacher who attended the Peabody Conservatory. I am well qualified to observe and critique the aspects of public speaking such as annunciation, poise, rhythm, volume, eye contact, and styles of speech. I have successfully taught speech at an after school academy for two years at levels ranging from kindergarten to sixth grade. I have taught speech to both native speakers and ESL students. My speech curriculum has included public speaking, both with preparation and speaking extemporaneously, conversational speech, persuasive speech, drama, and poetry.
I have tutored children privately and at an after school academy for seventeen years. I have a good working knowledge of developing reading comprehension, and I have worked with children in phonics, vocabulary, and pronunciation.
