Whittier College (Mathematics)
When I speak with parents, I am often asked the difficult but fair question: "Why does my child need a math tutor?" Beyond getting an "A" in the classroom and boosting the student's GPA, the benefits of a math tutor are not clear. After all, the vast majority of my students will not pursue a career in math, science or engineering. However, what I do know is that all my students will need to be critical thinkers and problems solvers if they want to succeed as adults. My goal at every tutoring session is to create and nurture the love of learning and develop problem solving skills that will last a lifetime.
All my students benefit from personal math tutoring because there is a genuine opportunity to ask me questions and receive responsive explanations. When I answer students, I do not just give them the "answer." I am more interested in how they arrived at the answer and will listen carefully to their explanation to determine if they understand the logic and reasoning behind each step. During tutoring sessions, the correct reasoning methods are reinforced and misunderstandings are diagnosed and corrected.
After working with thousands of students over the years, the vast majority of students, whether they are barely passing or getting As, enjoy math and problem solving if they simply have the tools to solve problems and are challenged according to their skill level. For students who are feeling overwhelmed, their frustration turns to disinterest. Students who have mastered the in-class material become easily bored due to the redundant repetition. While practice questions are necessary to reinforce skills, excessive worksheets and homework does not develop independent thinking. New ideas and inspiration simply do not come from constant repetition. At every session, I strive to challenge each and every student based on their abilities to raise their self-confidence and boost their enjoyment. I give all my students the tools and skills to confidently dissect a problem and solve it efficiently.
My tutoring process begins at different stages depending on student ability, but the goal is always the same: mastering the fundamentals while also increasing intellectual curiosity and problem solving skill.
My background and qualifications:
I graduated from Whittier College with a degree in mathematics and a specialty in childhood math instruction. I am a California credentialed math teacher and have been a math teacher and tutor for the last 12 years. I enjoy teaching math because I like challenging the false idea that math is hard. At the highest levels, I strive to inspire my students to become critical thinkers and adapt the lessons they have learned in math class outside of the classroom.
Being a math tutoring specialist is an enjoyable experience. Because I only teach math, I am able to dedicate my time to finding new and innovative methods to develop and explain concepts for routine problems. Most importantly, I have had the privilege and pleasure of being taught by some of the most creative and inspiring teachers, my own students. By telling me their problems and teaching me their solutions I have been able to develop and build a collective toolbox of strategies and methods to effectively address the most common and complicated questions.
I trust that you and your child will find me extremely skilled and friendly. I hope to meet you soon and exceed your expectations!
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Dear parents and students, I am excited to announce I now have an office to increase my availability and decrease my rates. My office is conveniently located in Torrance near Del Amo mall. The above rate is only for small group tutoring. Please contact me for rate details, directions and tutoring information. Thank you! Josephine truly restored my belief in the organization. She empathized with my situation and for me in the same day. My daughter was anti- tutors. In her words tutors are for "dummies"! No matter how many times I explained to her that she was WRONG and no one would think of her like that, she wouldn't budge. Unbeknownst to Josephine, my daughter entered the first session with a negative attitude. Josephine was so GREAT. She asked me to allow my daughter stay for an extra 30 minutes so that she felt comfortable with all of the material that was to be covered on the test the next day. My daughter went from failing tests and receiving mediocre grades on homework and classwork to A's and high B's on everything. Josephine is amazing!!! My daughter looks forward to every session. Josephine keeps me updated on my daughter's progress and let's me know when she needs me to get information from the teacher. We plan on Josephine tutoring her throughout the school year so we get through PreCalculus with an "A". Once again my daughter believes that she could be a nurse when she grows up. There was a lot at stake when we started tutoring and without Josephine even knowing it, she was her caring and knowledgeable self and restored my daughter's self-confidence and life goals. I am truly grateful.
Adult to adult tutoring is awkward however, Josephine was a pro. She made the session pleasant and quite valuable. Location is a bit far but worth the drive.
My son was extremely hesitant to receive tutoring lessons, stating he neither wanted nor needed a tutor; though, it was obvious he was in need of some help as he was receiving low quiz/test scores. After his first visit with Josephine, I asked him how things went and he said "Mom, she was really good. You should give her a 5-star rating." He then continued to explain how helpful just that one session had been. I was both shocked and pleased that he had such a great experience. We are definitely scheduling more sessions with Josephine.
Josephine was awesome. Made everything super easy to understand. So helpful and nice. Choose her as a tutor! You wont regret it!
Josephine is one of those rare people who is exceptionally gifted at teaching math in a way that really improves the student's skill. I was hoping my son's ability would become more complete, and not dependent on assistance through problems he is given. Josephine certainly exceeded all my expectations, and with her thorough yet enjoyable methods, my son truly understands and masters each stage he's given, and becomes confident to go to each new level. In addition, she is patient, very professional, and extremely personable. I'm truly impressed, and believe she could help anyone to master math, and they'd enjoy it along the way!
Josephine patiently helped my son understand concepts that were causing him difficulty. She was courteous, professional and knowledgeable. He really enjoyed working with her. On her first visit my son had a test coming up so they reviewed the study guide. He received 88% on the test.
When Ms. Josephine walked in my home, she wasted no time in helping my daughter. My daughter's confidence is so high, she said mom now I understand. Just with one session so far my daughter is more excited about Algebra 1, she said "I would love for her to be my teacher". We are looking forward to the great changes in my daughter's grade. We could not say thank you enough.
Josephine, thank you so much for the EXTRA help with my son on wed. You really went above and beyond with your scheduled to make sure she was prepared for her test. I really appreciate it. She always feels so much more confident after you work with her thank you.
Josephine is very organized and methodical. She tailors her lessons around my daughter's homework or upcoming tests and stays synchronized with her class. My daughter's confidence in herself and her understanding of he math material has increased so much in such a short time.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught middle and high school for over 10 years. I know the curriculum very well. I can easily point out the careless mistakes that students should watch out for when they take their test and do their homework.
As a California Credentialed teacher, I have a very keen understanding of what study skills a student requires in order to succeed.
Study skills are not taught as its own subject, but rather are most effective when I am tutoring a particular subject matter. For instance, many math students will simply write an answer down to a question they do not understand. A more effective skill to develop within a student is to have them take extensive notes of the problem so they are able to "re-create" the steps of the problem to ensure they are able to review the problem several weeks later in preparation for their test.
