You already know how to write, you know what you want to say and you’ve got your own way of saying it. There’s a story simmering inside as you read this. You’ve probably already started. Now together we'll draw that story out and introduce it to the publishing world. I’ll show you how to assemble a proper manuscript, where the markets are waiting, and we’ll focus on who can buy it and put it in front of readers.
Publishers look for a lot of different types of material, and their tastes (and personnel, for that matter) are constantly changing. One thing that never changes, though, is a good story. I’ll help hone that story, stay on topic, and show you the methods for presenting the best possible manuscript that will make a publisher sit up and believe in what you’ve sent.
I started in 1992 with a local newspaper and took another leap in 2000 when I founded Falling Star Magazine, a literary quarterly in the Los Angeles area. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
