About Yoko

Hi. I'm so thrilled that you want to learn Japanese.

My name is Yoko which means "sun's child" in Kanji (Chinese characters). My parents chose this name for me so that I could have a cheerful and happy life.

Learning a language should be a fun experience. Isn't it fantastic that you will be able to communicate with people that you never imagined you'd be able to speak with? You will have the opportunity to experience a new and different culture! That's exciting!

I have my bachelor's degree from UC Berkeley and master's degree from UCLA in Linguistics. I have taught Japanese at UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCLA Extension, UC Riverside and Michigan Center in Japan. In addition I have also taught "Business Japanese" and "Japanese Business Etiquette" at various companies in Los Angeles.

My passion is cooking, traveling, and taking pictures. I forgot to mention that I love to eat too.

I would love to learn what your goals are and based on your input I can cater the lessons to your needs. I hope to hear from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Math has always been my favorite subject. It may be something to do with my background of coming from Japan. I scored top 10% on SAT and even had an offer to purse an engineering degree at University of Massachusetts when I graduated from high school. Although I ended up getting a degree in a different field, my passion in teaching grew while I was in graduate school. For the past ten years, I have been teaching math to K through 8th grade students as a tutor. Not only I'm knowledgeable on math concepts, but my strength as a tutor is patience and kindness. My ultimate goal for my students to gain confidence in their math skills and in themselves, including Algebra 1.

Study Skills

I have volunteered at my children's high school to help students with study skills and their organization for the past 7 years. Also, since I have two children, I have helped them with their study skills when they were in middle school and high school as well and they have been doing very well.

We were looking for a Japanese tutor at the last minute to do a review session for my child before the high school Japanese 1 final exam. Thankfully we found Wyzant that has so many tutors online to offer their help! Yoko M. was prompt in taking our request so we hired her. And she is great! She is so experienced with tutoring. At first we had technical difficulty using the Wyzant platform but she
