About Carol

As an credentialed teacher who has also worked as a child therapist, I work with students with special needs and learning handicaps. I specialize in elementary grades, but I am also credentialed to tutor in high school business courses and test preparation especially for writing tests.

In recent years I founded and directed Somis Academy Charter School, primarily for students who needed to study outside the "walls of the classroom". This unique educational opportunity gives me great insight into learning styles, individualized learning, varied curriculum and approaches to learning that meet a variety of styles.

I have worked in individualized education for over 20 years, creating lesson plans and curriculum for students who need a personalized approach to their education. My philosophy is that every student is an individual student whose learning should be personalized based on the student's learning styles and individual needs.

I treasure each of my students, their plights and their successes. I welcome the opportunity to assist you with your child.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

History comes alive through interdisciplinary activities, study of the entire culture of the time and a variety of learning styles brought into each lesson.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold a Multiple Subjects credential in California to teach elementary students. I hold a school administrative credential in California to supervise instruction of teachers who hold a multiple subjects credential in California. I have taught students in K-8 for over 20 years in California and New Jersey.

Elementary Math

Elementary Math problems are problematic for the student throughout life if not corrected. Learning styles for each student vary. Often students are left behind in math because classroom teachers continue to forge ahead even when a student is floundering. A parent makes a wise choice to correct this situation early. I use an assessment tool to determine where the student is working, then individually take the student to where there is a need. I use the assistance of the parent whenever possible. The earlier a student's math is corrected, the less the student loses in school.

English

A need for help in English may be in one of the following categories:
1) Understanding reading and literature
2) English is not a first language
3) Speaking English
4) Writing English
5) Test Preparation
We will first need to determine the kind of help that is needed, and then plan for the learning process.

Microsoft Excel

Excel is a wonderful tool to display and calculate data for presentations or for individual analysis for personal use or for business applications.

Learning EXCEL is an extension of other Microsoft products, and works the similarly to other Microsoft Office products.

Any application that requires data collection and viewing capabilities can be easily handled in Microsoft Excel.

I have many years' experience in managing business applications as well as using it for my own personal needs, and I would be happy to assist someone else in learning how to use it.

Prealgebra

I have spent years working with students in pre algebra in individual settings. I believe that for prealgebra it is necessary to set up good study skills, review any areas that have not been addressed, and take corrective action as it comes up.

Pre Algebra is the necessary review of all prior education in math preparatory to studying higher maths in high school.

Reading

Students who struggle with reading often have missed some of the basic principles of reading. A quick assessment can assist the family in knowing where the student reads both for comfort and for growth. From that position the tutor can guide student in growing the skills of reading comprehension. In today's culture, reading has often taken a back seat to other media. Students often struggle to keep up with their reading skills.

In the tutoring process, the student will develop from the reading level where they feel comfortable.

Study Skills

I am an elementary teacher who also works as a child therapist. Students learn best when they have appropriate learning skills and when they understand their own learning styles. Each person's learning style is individual to themselves. Home study creates a great opportunity to learn based on individual aptitudes and strengths of each individual. Study skills include an individual's propensity to use good time management techniques, set priorities, adapt to study environment, know limitations of interests and skills and how to manage them.

Tutoring is a great way to individualize the student to create their own best styles for learning.

Just right

My daughter is very shy and tentative. Carol immediately connected with her and was able to draw her out. They worked together nicely to assess where my daughter needed the most support. We are looking forward to our next visits...
