Cal Poly SLO (Structural Engineer)
My name is Sina and was born and raised in Southern California. I moved to SLO to peruse a degree in Architectural Engineering and continued my education by receiving my Credential in teaching middle and high school mathematics. I am currently a teacher in Templeton looking to supplement my income.
I have over 15 years experience as a tutor and am in my second years as a teacher. I love what I do because I know the time I spend with people is something they will carry on for the rest of their lives. I am avid basketball fan and player, I have been practicing karate since I was 5, and generally enjoy any outdoor activity or sport. I have two dogs (Calvin and Hobbes) that I love more than life itself. I am in the process of planning my wedding for the Spring of 2017. I have a sarcastic personality but I know who can handle it and who does not appreciate it. I have never had a student tell me that I don't make sense or am difficult to understand. I love spending time with people because I learn just as much from others as I teach them. The most exciting part about tutoring for me is knowing that I have made in impact in someones else's life.
I have studied mathematics beyond calculus but generally like to stay below that level. I never want to be in a situation where I cannot answer my students questions which is possible in those upper level mathematics courses. For example Calc 1 should not be a problem but the most difficult questions in higher level calculus classes can stump anyone. The lower level mathematics questions are my bread and butter and more than simply showing you how to answer specific questions, my job is to help you understand the tools you will need to solve those questions on your own.
Finding the right tutor is the most important part of this process. While I have great confidence in myself, I know that the key is being comfortable and have the type of relationship that encourages you to challenge yourself. This is the main difference between me and many other tutors. I am not there to help you do your homework or just prepare you for a test. My goal is to help you think analytically to solve problems, to challenge yourself beyond the comfort zone where you expect answers to just be given to you, to help you see that the harder you try the more rewarding you success will be. This isn't just a job for me. I am passionate about what I do and I hope to have the type of influence on my students that helps them see they will be successful when they are passionate about what they do as well. Sina brought ideas in how to approach studying, a key factor to consider when having difficulties with a subject, like Math!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught and tutored mathematics up through calculus.
I am currently teaching at a middle school in Pismo but live in Templeton. I have taught and tutored every level and am very passionate about what I do. I am 31 and know how to connect with students. I know how to inspire them and empower them to reach their potential. It's what I live for.
