About James

I am a Southern California native and a freelance musician as well as a member of a non-profit brass quintet and a private instructor. My goal as an instructor is to instill into my students the same love and appreciation of music which I have.

As a 4 year member of a non-profit brass quintet, named Oakwood Brass Outreach Project, I have worked with many different schools and students throughout the Pasadena/San Gabriel valley. Our organization recognizes the importance of music in young students lives.

As a private instructor for over 5 years, I have taught many students of all ages ranging from 6 to 65. I have taught students with disabilities and special needs. I try to be as sensitive as I can to each persons needs.

I teach mainly trumpet lessons but also teach basic music theory, history, and composition. I tell my students, "I cannot practice for you, I can only show you the best way how."
I require my students to purchase practice books but will provide certain materials.

My normal hourly rate is 45/hr. Contact me for more info

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

Part of my bachelor's degree was 4 semesters of basic and advanced ear training. I tested out of the first semester and completed the other semesters with high grades. I also sing and believe this to be a great help when teaching students ear training

General Music

Having a bachelor's and a master's degree in the field of music has given me plenty of knowledge of all types of music. I have studied many genres including baroque, classical, romanticism, neo-classical, avant-garde, jazz, Latin American, world music, minimalism, rock, movie composition, and others.

Music History

During both my undergrad and graduate studies I took many music history courses. I have studied at length 18th, 19th, and 20th century music with a main focus on turn of the century studies including serialism, twelve-tone studies, minimalism, movie scores, and jazz.

Trumpet

I have been a trumpet instructor for over 5 years sins graduating from my Masters program at the School of Music at Texas Christian University. I have also been employed by the Pasadena Unified School District to teach sectionals at local middle and elementary schools. I always try to give my stu dents the best working environment possible by being sensitive to each students needs and abilities.
