About Bernard

I am a senior citizen, a retired intelligence analyst from the Department of Homeland Security, who is interested in improved educational results for children. I realize the sometimes full need for one-on-one help and instruction, having been a child once myself. I never believe that a child should not aim high. I was once told not to aim too high in particular for myself, and God had other plans. I went on to and up the educational ladder to a post-graduate degree.

My interest was always in international studies, and for this reason, today, I try to be current and concerned about world events. I would also like young people to do the same. But in so doing, young people need tools. I believe that my best help for young students would be in the areas of reading, spelling, cultural geography (to include map reading), and, perhaps, depending on the grade level of the student, political science. I have some ability to speak and understand Spanish. I also have ability in writing, and several of my writings to newspaper editors have been published.

My experience with children concerns my being currently associated with the Child Evangelical Fellowship of the Inland Valley Chapter of Southern California as a board member, and I have taught a missionary segment of Biblical teaching at one of the local public schools. In the past, I volunteered for Every Generation Ministries, editing class lessons for children for further translation into the languages of Latin America and Eastern Europe.

I was also involved for several years as a board member for the Temecula Sister Cities Association, and assisted in the activities of school children from The Netherlands and Japan while on visit to Temecula. I fully realize that children are our greatest resource, and that a good, rounded education, and concern for their welfare, are some of the best things that we can give them.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Political Science

I majored in International Relations and was awarded a Bachelors in Arts degree from Eisenhower College, in Seneca Falls, New York. I am interested in the electoral process in our own country, as well as comparative governments in Europe, having taken such a course many years ago. I was active in political campaigns since the national election in 2008, California's gubernatorial election in 2010, and the last national election in 2012. I try to keep informed through selective media. Concerning political science, I would also teach concerning the demographic makeup of the country, inclusive of the states and local areas, and what this would portend for the the election process in the future. I would would hope that any teaching on my part would help students become more interested in the electoral process and end what certainly seems to be being uninformed and apathetic. Above all, I would want students to not only participate in elections, but also be independent of mind.

Religion

I read the Bible just about daily and have read a number of books concerning Christianity and its relation to every day living. In addition, I am a board member of the Child Evangelism Fellowship, Inland Valley Chapter of Southern California, that oversees the progress of Biblical teaching to children in 21 public schools in the area. I have taught the missionary segment in one of those schools. During that segment, I also teach children about the geographic aspect of missionary work, in order that they know where countries are located and where missionaries have lived and worked. In the past; during my time in the military and in college, I have had the opportunity to live in and to study in such countries as, India, Nepal, Italy, Greece, Spain, and Mexico. I have also traveled through much of Western Europe. All of this has given me the opportunity to speak to children about other children living in foreign lands, their cultures, and their influence by Biblical teachings.

Social Studies

My educational background for Social Studies includes the following credentials: 1) Associate in Arts degree in Liberal Arts from Mitchell College, New London, Connecticut; 2) A Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations from Eisenhower College in Seneca Falls, New York, and 3) Social Studies courses while studying at Thunderbird Graduate School in Glendale, Arizona, and obtaining an Masters in Business Administration degree. I have a love for geography and cultural studies, and would particularly enjoy teaching these courses and that children would grow up knowing where countries are located on maps. I have also volunteered for such organizations as the Temecula Sister Cities Association, where I was a Board Member, promoting international relationships between Temecula and Voorburg, Holland, and Nakayama, Japan. I am avidly interested in current events, and I would like that young people become more informed about them.
