About Judy

Bio

I taught 8th grade English for 13 years in the L.A. area. I have a valid California Lifetime Teaching Credential. I am very experienced in teaching literature and can make Shakespeare understandable and fun. Although it is not my favorite part of English, I am good at teaching grammar and punctuation. I enjoy teaching students to write everything from a complete sentence to a paragraph to a research paper.

Also I am licensed therapist. I work well with students and usually develop rapport...

Public Speaking

I am very experienced with public speaking. I gave my first speech in 5th grade in a school competition, competed in speech competitions on a state level in high school, founded and lead a choral reading group, and majored in Speech and Theater in college. I have taught public speaking when I taught in the public schools. As a therapist I have coached some of my clients with their speeches. I frequently give speeches at seminars and groups. I can help students construct their speeches and present them effectively with eye contact, appropriate volume and vocal variety, pacing, gestures, and teach them how to overcome stage fright.

Reading

Some children find learning to read very difficult. It does not mean that they are lacking in intelligence. It means that they may not be quite able yet to make all of the connections needed with letters, sounds, words, and meaning. It may also mean that no one has found the right way to present it to him.

I believe that I qualify to teach learning skills. I have worked with many student on their study skills while teaching English in the class room for 13 years and while tutoring. I have taught them how to organize their materials so they have them in a logical order that makes the work flow easier-set-up ahead of time, put what they are turning in in a special place, chunk their work, schedule what will be done at what times, lengthen their concentration span, build in rewards, etc.

ADHD

I have a great deal of knowledge and experience with ADD/ADHD. For all the challenges these kids have, I really like them. They are often bright and very creative. I have worked with them as a teacher, as a behaviorist in homes and schools, and a therapist. I have taught classes on ADD/ADHD to teachers. I also have some dearly loved family members with ADD/ADHD.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD),

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have a great deal of knowledge and experience working with children who have Autism. I have worked with them both in the classroom and in their homes. I have worked on their behaviors and their school work. Each child with Autism is different. I know how to tailor a lesson to their learning style. Many Autistic children are much more affectionate and capable than stereotyped descriptions ever even hint at.
