About Carol

Hello! I hold California teaching credentials K-12. I would love to help you improve your grades in any subject (K-8) and in English, Social Studies, Study Skills, Test Prep, and ESL (6-12). I substitute teach in the Tahoe-Truckee area, where I'm known as Mrs. Rainbow.

My teaching style varies depending on the age and situation of the student, but before we can work together to improve your grades, we need to find out what's holding you back. I've done lots of testing and evaluations, and can help you with that.

If you're facing challenges at school, the last thing you need is MORE work! My job is to help you succeed with the work you need to do for school. You'll need to help me by having your books and assignments with you when we meet. Let's work together to get those grades UP!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

CBEST

I took and passed the CBEST. My California credentials, (K-12) were renewed in April and are valid until 2016.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold California credentials for grades K-8. I have taught for many years, both in and out of the United States, and I am very experienced in working with ESL students. I am familiar with the California state educational standards in all subjects K-6, and especially enjoy working with reading and language, social studies, science, and math. Many below average results in elementary subjects relate to reading skills and study habits, and I have lots of strategies for helping with these. Let's get together and have fun catching up!

ESL/ESOL

I have a post-graduate diploma in teaching English as a Second Language. I lived and taught in
Europe and Asia for many years, so many of my students were English learners. I've developed many strategies for helping English learners with the California state curriculum and would love to help all English learners do their best in the California schools!

Guitar

I'm able to teach beginning guitar and music theory. I've played for many years and taught both children at adult classes at recreation centers and continuing education programs. I currently perform for students when I substitute teach.

Reading

I specialized in reading K-12 when I did my first MA degree.
Reading is an integral part of any language arts curriculum and I am very experienced in teaching strategies that help students improve their skills and comprehend better.

Social Studies

I taught K-8 social studies as part of core curricula for many years. Topics covered included history, geography, community studies, and cultural studies that were based on state standards for each grade.

Study Skills

You can't build a house without tools or cook a five-star meal without recipes! In order to improve your grades, you need to "learn how you learn" and improve the skills that help you do that. I can help you with reading, writing, vocabulary and math skills, and teach you some tricks to keep yourself organized and ready to do your best! I've been a teacher and traveler for many years and have learned lots of study strategies from other teachers all over the world! I've taught every grade from kindergarten through college, and there isn't much I haven't seen, so let's get together and learn!
