About Mary Helen

Teaching has been a passion of mine for the last 30 years. I have taught students from Kinder up to 8th grade. I love teaching children and watching them grow. I believe that all children can learn with a little bit of encouragement. I understand that not all students learn the same way. Some students need more time and encouragement. My specialty is helping students with reading. I feel the greatest achievement a teacher can have is to see their student grow and achieve their goal.

I began my career in first grade where I taught for 15 years. I moved to the fourth grade for four years. I have taught for 11 years in junior high. In junior high I have taught the Sciences, Social Studies and American history.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have graduated from California State University Northridge, Bachelor of Arts/Liberal Studies and a master’s degree in Education from Loyola Marymount University. I taught 1st grade for 15 years 4th grade for 3 years all subjects:

• Engaged and supported all students in learning.
• Created and maintained effective environments for student learning.
• Organized subject matter for student learning.
• Planned instruction and designed learning experiences for all students.
• Assessed student learning.
• Developed as a professional educator.
• An accommodating and versatile individual with the talent to develop in inspiring hands-on lessons that will capture a child’s imagination and breed success.
• Skills in selecting and adapting best teaching materials for classroom use, with unique mix of experience & knowledge to help students be attentive & life-long active learners

Phonics

I was a First grade teacher for 15 years. I taught Open Court which was based on phonemic awareness and phonics instruction. This program had lessons which were designed to scaffold and support students. Students learned through decoding and encoding of sounds and skills, plus vocabulary was taught. I also taught comprehension skills and encouraged students to do their best.

Study Skills

I believe that successful students who have good study habits will apply these habits to all of their classes. I have graduated from California State University Northridge, Bachelor of Arts/Liberal Studies and a master’s degree in Education from Loyola Marymount University. I taught 1st grade for 15 years and 4th grade for 3 years all subjects. Through my experience
as a teacher I have helped students become successful by teaching them to:

• try not to do much studying at one time.
• plan specific times for studying.
• try to study at the same time each day.
• set specific goals for their study times.
• start studying when planned.
• work on the assignment they find most difficult first.
• review their notes before beginning an assignment.
• review their school work over the weekend
