For the past seven years I have been very successfully working with WyzAnt students aged 5 to adult. I'm an experienced and well-qualified tutor, having more than 4250 hours of WyzAnt teaching alone. I meet students weekday mornings, afternoons, evenings and weekends. I offer an introductory meeting at no charge to determine your needs, and my suitability.
I have a great deal of experience helping children and adults learn to better express themselves, both in writing and speaking. I believe strongly that the successful use of the English language depends on learning to read and write in an organized and intelligent way; the real aim of language use is to be able to communicate well in both.
I have two degrees from San Jose State and two from Stanford University. I think I’ve been able to help people learn English and perfect their language skills because of my own experience learning English as a second language, years ago, as an immigrant. I’m fluent in English and German, spent my younger years raising four children in local schools, pursued my own education thereafter, culminating in a PhD in History from Stanford(1998). I subsequently worked as a market research analyst, and in the last few years, successfully, tutored both children and adults.
My qualifications also include tutoring students in history based on a long-time interest in the subject, as well as on my degrees in History; this includes TA experience while working on my degree at Stanford, plus teaching a Humanities course there, following graduation.
Apart from my university teaching experience and, of course, teaching our four children, all of whom went on to graduate from college and/or graduate school, I am now devoting my daily life full-time to tutoring and teaching, having retired from my activity as market research analyst.
I live in Sunnyvale with my husband and our dog.
For your Information: I teach only at my home, rather than traveling to yours, because here I have a great variety of teaching materials that I utilize whenever it is essential in the course of the lesson to reinforce any gap in my students' education and general knowledge. Karin is a great teacher. She is patience and knowledgeable to teach my son for English writing. I can tell my son's writing improvements through her teaching.
Karin is very patient with my teenage daughter, and has a way to motivate her to learn. Thank you Karin.
Karin, is an amazing tutor. She is very knowledgeable for the history and the language origin. Learning the English from her is like a taking a wonderful journey with her, so pleasant and so much to learn!
We've been working with Karin for months. She is so gentle, accommodating and good at what she do. Always great!
Karin is a great tutor and very nice human. My son enjoys the lessons. She motivates him a lot to do better every time. She has a lot patience and she is a great support for us. Lucky to have her as a tutor.
My both sons have English classes with Karin over 1 year. She is a very patient and caring person. My older son used to have some difficulty for writing, but now he is more confident and knows what he wants to write. The younger one has more creative mind, but he does not know much vocabulary, so he always wrote very short sentences. But now, he knows a lot of words and is able to write a longer paragraph. We are so lucky to find Karin and really like to express our appreciation to Karin for being a great English teacher to both our sons.
Thank you so much, Karin.
My 9 year old daughter has been working with Karin for a couple months. Karin is a super patient, kind and knowledgeable teacher. I love the way Karin teaches: encouraging curiosity and exploration. She tries all the way to find out my daughter's interest and keeps high standards for my daughter's work. She makes sure my daughter put effort on the writing and enjoys it. My daughter loves her lesson every time. We feel so lucky that we met Karin!
As a house wife, my English is still very poor a year after I came to the United States. At first, I went to ESL classes, but they are not suitable for me. I knew I had to look for a tutor.
I'm very lucky to have chosen Karin. Karin is very kind, gentle, knowledgeable and wise. She is very good at teaching others how to learn English.
Now the English class with Karin is my favorite thing.
Ms. Karin is very kind and patient. She recommends books that enrich my son's knowledge, and I enjoy reading them also. I am glad that my son has a chance to learn with Ms. Karin. After a few months learning with Ms. Karin, my son said that he not only learns about literature, writing, he learns about important things in life with Ms.Karin also. I could not say how lucky I think my son is to have Ms. Karin as his teacher during this period of his life as a teenager.
I now have all 3 of my children learning with Ms. Karin. They enjoy learning the language skills and acquired knowledge about history as well as other topics also.
My son really enjoys his lessons with Karin. She has a wonderfully calm, caring, and patient personality that encourages him. Her academic standards are high; she explains the material, gives homework, and goes over the answers in the next class. Karin is also very accessible; on very short notice she has made time to help my son prepare for school tests.
Thanks Karin. My daughter is pretty enjoyed the writing class and she will actively finish her writing homework. We hope our son can enjoy more.
One of reason why I chose Karin for my two sons is because she gets a lot of positive feedback from her previous students, and of her vast experience. Before we even schedule a real lesson, we met for half an hour so she can meet and read my sons sample writing. Based on that Karin was able to prepare the materials for my sons. By the end of our first lesson, our sons seem to like Karin because she is patient which is something we as the parent can't provide. We are fortunate to finally find someone like Karin to help our sons with their writing.
Ms. Karin is very kind and patient. She brought me some books that included The old man and the sea and English conversation and several other books. I enjoy these books. I am glad to learning with Ms. Karin.
She has always encouraged my daughter. Her speaking voice is soft and speed is appropriate. And she is also very patient. We are lucky to meet her.
Karin made my lesson easy and comfortable to deal with. She is patient and a very good listener you have to be if you're working with me. I hope my session does not send her into retirement I can be a little hard headed.I plan on purchasing a package with Karin so I can reach my long overdue goals.
Thank you Karin!
I thought that absent the confusion between the desires of my teacher and the actual norms for writing essays and such, it went well. In the context of tutoring, Karin did an excellent and clear job of establishing exactly what there was to improve on and I think subsequent sessions will be much smoother from here.
Karin is really patient and knows how to a teach little kid. Even though she only started her tutoring last week, I believe she will do well going forward.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
