About Ashley

I have worked as a tutor for 3 years, and I recently received a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of California, Riverside. In the upcoming weeks, I will begin work on a Masters of Education and teaching credential.

For the past two years, I have been a research assistant and intern at an autism resource center on the UCR campus. I have worked one-on-one with students on the autism spectrum, as well as school psychologists that have taught me how to interact with students with varying disabilities or disorders.

In addition, I am currently a Sunday School teacher at my church and have had several leadership roles through both my church and a local daycare facility. I have worked with students of all ages and backgrounds, many coming from low performing or Title 1 schools.

My work has given me a chance to work with student with learning disabilities, as well as students who simply need an extra push to excel. I love what I do, and I have found that every experience has made me more prepared and more excited to work with your child!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have worked with several ADD/ADHD students, as well as studied alongside a professor who teaches these students. I have been taught different methods that best help students with attention problems by educators experienced in this field. I have also developed my own techniques through my own experiences that further stimulate these children's learning.

Algebra 1

I have excelled in math my whole life. In high school, I passed every available math class, including both statistics and calculus. At my university, I also excelled in a full year of college level calculus. Although I have not taken an Algebra 1 class in several years, the skills I learned then have been carried through to every math I have taken since, causing my algebra skills to only become stronger. I have also spent the last school year working with several students specifically in algebra 1.

Aspergers

For the past two years, I have been an intern at an autism resource center that serves the Inland Empire. I have worked under child and school psychologists that have taught me how to specifically work with children on the autism spectrum. I have also worked one-on-one with children with aspergers during reading assessments that I was trained to administer.

Autism

I currently work at the UC Riverside SEARCH center, an organization designed to assess children suspected to have autism and provide their families with resources. I have been part of assessments with children on all ends of the spectrum, and assist the counselors and professors with research regarding children with autism.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a lot of experience working with elementary aged children through church programs, such as AWANA and VBS, and through daycares that provide "learning time" to small groups of children. I have taught small groups of pre-K to middle school school aged students a wide array of subjects that ranged in difficulty. I have had practice teaching numerous subjects (basic letter/number recognition, elementary math, basic reading, writing, prealgebra) in classroom-like settings through my family's daycare for over four years. I am skilled in all of these subjects (graduated salutatorian from my high school) and am consistently a favorite of the students due to both my teaching techniques and my ability to work well with children.

Elementary Math

I have recently just passed a year of college calculus, as wells trigonometry, algebra, statistics, and high school calculus, with above average grades. Elementary math is extremely simple for me and I consider it one of the easiest subjects for me to teach to younger children.

Elementary Science

When I first entered my college, I was a science major so I was introduced to numerous different science classes where we had to have an in depth understanding of all topics in order to pass the exams. I also have been a science fair judge for a combined elementary/middle school show where I was able to review many of the science topics covered in this age range. Combining these experiences has given me a feel for elementary science and has made it easier for me to explain many difficult topics to children in ways that they can both understand and relate to.

Grammar

I have been working throughout the previous school year to teach proper grammar, primarily to elementary and middle school ages students. With dictation, sentence comparison, and other related tools, my students have been able to grasp a firmer understanding in the basics of grammar.

Phonics

My elementary students and I regularly work together on phonics during our lessons. I use a technique, which incorporates flashcards and whiteboards, to help students identify individual letters within a word and the sounds each letter makes in the word. We also practice blending, where we put the individual sounds together to make new words, and I emphasize correct pronunciation, especially during these lessons.

Prealgebra

I have spent the last school year preparing students for high school algebra and, in some cases, reteaching algebra subjects that students struggled with during class. One of my oldest students managed to bring her grade up from a low C to an A after working with me for a few weeks on algebra and its related topics.

Reading

I have been an avid reader for years. In elementary school, I was already reading at a high school level. I have much experience working with elementary aged children on their homework, primarily with reading.

Spelling

Ever since I began school I have had an aptitude for spelling. I had participated in numerous spelling bees throughout elementary and middle school, and continue to do well today. I am constantly learning new words, through school, books, and the internet, so I am consistently building up skills in spelling, vocabulary, and reading.

Study Skills

I am currently a student at the University of California. I have made use of my organizational and study skills throughout my educational career. I managed to, in my senior year of high school, pass 6 AP class with above average grades while also participating in numerous music and volunteer activities outside of school. I know what it takes to develop good study habits as I have incorporated these habits into my own education, and I am enthusiastic about sharing the skills that have helped me over the years.

Vocabulary

I have been reading at a high school level since elementary school, which gave me a higher vocabulary level than most people my age. I continue to read today, constantly building my skills in both vocabulary and reading.

Writing

I have tutored students in writing for 2+ years. I have given lessons and proofread different pieces of writing that students would submit for homework assignments, research reports, and college applications. I have also taught the essay portion of the SAT to high school students. I just received my B.A. in political science from UCR, a degree that required advanced writing skills.
