About Michael

I am a recent graduate of American University's School of Communication with an M.A. in Film and Video, where I was an official nominee for the J. William Fulbright Scholarship for an interactive transmedia project. I attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for college, graduating with a double major in journalism and political science. I possess a strong academic and professional background in new media journalism, digital sports production, and film/TV development. I have tutored elementary to high school-aged students for over 3 years (as time permitted during my studies) as a full-time student.

I love connecting and helping students develop their skills to fulfill their potential because I have been a recipient of solid teaching mentoring, so I know firsthand the impact of such an educational investment towards future success.

My academic and professional experiences have involved both analytical and creative writing. As a visual storyteller, my work demands clear and concise written communication, so I am adept at grammar, proofreading, and copy editing. My work also involves research, which requires extensive reading of both fictional and nonfictional sources, so I am comfortable with finding and organizing new information, as well.

I have tutored elementary school students in reading, writing, spelling, grammar, and vocabulary development. I try to focus on reading and writing because these two skills serve as fundamentals to any academic discipline in higher education and eventual career.

My academic and professional background in media involves the extensive use of software pertaining to visual design and production including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Final Cut Pro. I have also taken graphic design and photography courses and worked as a photographer on a client-by-client basis by shooting engagement photos for print and digital publication.

I have taught computer literacy classes that centers on word processing, internet navigation, and creating simple presentations to both youth and adults. I am proficient with Microsoft Office, an essential software in today's academic and professional world.

If you are looking to develop or supplement your reading, writing, computer literacy, or media production skills in a creative, engaging, and encouraging way, I would love to help you on your journey. I'm more than happy to meet in-person for an initial assessment and consultation to see if I can benefit you through a meaningful tutoring relationship.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I've had prior private tutoring experience in English from elementary school to the college level by helping students write papers, develop better grasp of grammar, expand their vocabulary, and improve their reading comprehension. I have worked with both native English speakers and immigrant students including refugees from more than 19 countries, so I'm confident and flexible with each individual's unique supplementary needs.

Film

I recently earned a M.A. in Film and TV from American University's School of Communication and worked extensively on both narrative and documentary projects. I am trained in screenwriting, having written multiple screenplays and participated in a writers group for table reads and critique. I recently wrote, directed, and executive produced a SAGIndie film currently submitted to festivals. Technically, I am proficient with nonlinear video editing software such as Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro.

General Computer

For over two years, I have taught children and adult students general computer literacy education, which covered proficiency with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Office, Microsoft PowerPoint, internet browsing, and digital media consumption. Have experience with ESL and refugee students.

Photography

I am trained in both film and digital photography from a graduate-level course that taught me the fundamentals of good photography like composition, depth of field, aperture, shutter speed, light exposure, and ISO. I used manual film cameras and developed pictures in the dark room, so I understand the printing process, which includes choosing the correct photographic paper, using changing bags in absolute darkness, and using different chemical baths and solutions for the appropriate amount of time. I am also adept at digital photography, which uses the same fundamentals of film photography, and have taken engagement photos for clients for both print and online use.

Writing

Writing has always been my favorite subject and skill. I wrote for college publications both as an undergraduate and graduate student including an intensive research proposal for the J. William Fulbright Research Scholarship for which I was an official nominee. I have experience as a new media journalist, having covered current events, politics, and sports in The Huffington Post and Bleacher Report.
