I'm a native Bostonian, graduated valedictorian of my high school class in 2009, and hold a degree in History from Princeton University, class of 2013 (I also hold a certificate- or "minor" in Theater). I am extremely passionate about learning, and have been my entire life- I love learning new things, and nothing makes me happier than sharing that experience with someone else. Not only am I a teacher, I am also an actor (and improviser!), which makes me uniquely skilled at creating a tailor-made learning experience for each individual student. As an improvisor in particular, I understand the benefits of being flexible and adapting to new circumstances, and this influences my teaching style in a way that benefits the student directly- after meeting with a student, I can adjust our lessons to cater to his or her particular learning style, conscious of his or her unique strengths. I put a premium on my students enjoying the process of learning, and I try to minimize the stress of the learning environment by integrating fun "brain-breaks" (jokes/games/pop culture references, if needed) into the lesson, in order to make the information "pop" for the student.
The basic tenant of my teaching philosophy is that understanding "why" a certain problem/grammatical construction/etc. is the way it is is always to be preferred over understanding just "what" to do with the problem/grammatical construction/etc. I believe in the importance of students taking ownership over their own learning experience, and I believe that this approach increases students problem-solving ability, so that they can solve similar problems without having to resort to a standard, (and likely rigid) methodology. An example: I once had an Algebra I student whose teacher had instructed her to solve word-problems using a certain matrix. When helping the student do her homework, I demonstrated to the student how to use the matrix, but also explained to her how and why the matrix worked. This kind of teaching facilitated the student's ability to
This review is long overdue!
My son has been working with Carolyn since September and she has become an integral part of his academic success. He has executive functioning challenges and learning differences that can make the homework process daunting and result in complete noncompliance. With Carolyn’s support, he has gone from missing multiple assignments to staying completely up to date in all of his classes. He is beginning to take ownership of his own homework process and develop better study skills. Carolyn’s patience is boundless and she brings a sense of humor and relaxed confidence to everything she does. My son immediately was comfortable with her and they have developed a solid working relationship that has allowed him to grow as a student both at home during his study time and in the classroom. I cannot recommend Carolyn highly enough!Stacy, 69 lessons with Carolyn

Low-key, responsive, and excellent tutor
My 9th grade daughter recently changed schools, and had some catching up to do in Latin to continue to perform well in that class. Carolyn assessed my daughter's needs quickly, worked with her in a focused manner for several weeks, and we're now in great shape. After observing her success with my younger daughter, I introduced her to my 12th grade daughter, who wants help to prepare for her SAT Subject Test in Latin. Carolyn spoke briefly with her, and they have a plan to tackle that exam. My children are very different people, with very different learning styles, and I believe that Carolyn's knowledge, experience, and approach will serve them both very well. Further, she responds quickly to texts, has been able to accommodate our schedules, is warm and engaging, and does her work very, very well. We will definitely be utilizing her talents in the future.Caroline, 10 lessons with Carolyn

Carolyn worked with our 8th grade daughter just before her Latin Final and really helped her to grasp concepts she was struggling with. She provided our daughter with the understanding to feel confidant during her exam and so score highly as well.David, 22 lessons with Carolyn
