I am a retired middle school band director from the San Francisco Public School System. For 20 years I taught elementary through High School students vocal and instrumental music, theory, jazz band and jazz theory. I also conducted large adult groups in San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin Counties.
I have a vast background in performance in concert bands, orchestras large and small, jazz bands, chamber ensembles, and other music endeavors such as arranging and composition. My instruments of performance are clarinet, saxophone, oboe, English horn and bassoon. Most recently I played the bassoon in the Delta College Concert Band. My experience as an ESL teacher assisted me greatly in the public school and resulted in a very large inclusive music program.
I have prepared myself for the CBEST (and taken it) and I was part of the after school tutoring program at the middle and high school level that was offered through Aptos Middle School where I taught for 18 years.

If you want to move ahead in music quickly and have a good time doing it, I have the background and experience to make the subject fun and interesting. I have many time tested techniques to engage students in performance, jazz improvisation, theory and composition and other areas of music and actual instruments. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have extensive experience composing, arranging, analyzing and performing music. Ear training and improvisation were part of my university studies. I have developed several of my own approaches to these subjects that I think can engage young and old students alike.
I have played the oboe since I was 15 years old. I have studied at university level. I make my own reeds. I love the instrument and how it is made. I know the literature written for the oboe student and soloist.
