About Eric

Hi,

I recently returned to California after staying in Osaka since October 2009. I went to Japan to learn the language, the culture, and to learn and grow as a teacher. I attended a language school until 2011, working part-time at an English cafe and a conversation school, as well as private tutoring to individuals and small groups. After graduating in 2011, not wanting to return to the US quite yet, I found a job at a bigger conversation school and began to work full time. I met a lot of great students and really enjoyed my time there. This June my visa expired, and rather than renew it, I decided to return to California and get my teaching credential to become a high school Japanese teacher.

I've taught English to children, adults of all ages, in both private and group lessons, with lesson plans tailored to each student's level. I've taught with both free conversation and from a textbook, so if there's a test you need to study for, I can help. If you need to practice for a speech contest, I can help with both editing and pronunciation. Or if you just want to learn how to talk about movies, books, etc. with your friends, I can help.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary Math

Basic math, integers, fractions, decimals, percentages, basic geometry, statistics, etc.

Japanese

Able to teach beginning and intermediate students in speaking, reading, writing and listening practice. Lessons can be conducted using either textbooks or a curriculum constructed around the student's needs.

Microsoft Windows

I have used Windows since the days of Windows 3.1, through 95-98, Windows ME, XP, 7, and 10. I keep up to date on keyboard shortcuts and the little "tips and tricks" that let users become power users.

Reading

I have taught reading to students in Japan and America. I have taught ELD students at the high school level, as well as language intervention to students in grades 4-8. I emphasize natural reading through books the child actually enjoys.
