About Sophie

Striving for an top-notch test score, or mastering math and physics classes, can be daunting and frustrating. Sometimes a teacher doesn’t explain the material well, or abstract concepts don’t quite click. That’s why I bring patience and a positive attitude to my tutoring. I use a technique of offering multiple explanations for each concept, rooting my explanations in content the student already understands. I like to build a rapport with students in early lessons by learning their interests and extracurriculars. I find this helps me communicate in a way that works for the student and makes for a friendly, comfortable relationship.

I can boast of raising a D- student to an A in high school physics, of several 100-point+ boosts in SAT scores, and of sharing dozens of “aha” moments with budding mathematicians. It gives me satisfaction to see my students deeply grasp concepts and improve in their areas of study. I’ve taught all levels of math from pre-algebra to AP calculus, physics (including mechanics, circuits, and E&M), and many standardized tests. My client base is mostly high-school level but I’ve taught children as young as 9 and offer help for college students as well.

I scored 2400 on the SAT and carry a bachelors in engineering physics and masters degree in materials science engineering from Stanford, so I’m well equipped to answer questions students have. In 2015 and 2016 I worked with an elite California tutoring agency with a reputation for producing top marks in standardized tests. I coach SAT, SAT Subject Tests (SAT II), ACT, and ISEE, among others. Since there are conceptual connections between all fields of math and physics, and shared techniques across test formats, I’ve found it productive to have mastery in teaching a wide range of subjects.

Personal interests include sustainable battery technology, energy policy, international travel, current events, and women’s advancement in STEM.

Please feel free to inquire about lessons and we can schedule a first meeting at your convenience. I look forward to working with you or your son/daughter!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ISEE

ISEE prep, more than any other test prep, must be adapted to the age and aptitude of the students. I have worked with one student, a 4th grader, on ISEE prep, but I believe that my experience doing ACT and SAT prep would be more applicable to an older student.

Linear Algebra

I completed the introductory course in linear algebra as well as a course in advanced matrix theory at Stanford. I have an extensive background in math tutoring and have worked with one student on linear algebra in the past. It's my personal favorite subject, so I'm always excited to help someone else love it like I do!

Approachable, Kind and Flexible

I had an especially tough general physics instructor and had to complete the material in a shortened time frame. I am not the student who goes out and finds a tutor for each subject, but I really needed to solidify my problem solving approach in physics. Sophie was able to break-down the problems for me and showed me various solutions to a variety of general physics problems. She was approachable,
