About Juliana

My name is Juliana, and I am a sophomore at Stanford University majoring in Linguistics. I grew up in the Bay Area but attended high school in Taiwan, where I became the only person from my country to be accepted into Stanford’s Class of 2019. I wrote my college essays on my own and deeply enjoyed the process of figuring out how to convey my thoughts and dreams to college admissions committees.

Beyond that, I genuinely and deeply love the art of writing, and want to share what I’ve learned over the years with others looking to express themselves.

I am a published poet and writer, with personal essays and poetry in publications such as XoJane, Matador Network, decomP Magazine, Thought Catalog and more. My poetry was among one of the 64 pieces selected out of over 100,000 entries to be published in The Best Teen Writing of 2015, and I also hold National Scholastic Gold Medals in the Poetry and Critical Essay categories. I’ve worked as an editor for two websites and three literary magazines, and have extensive experience tutoring and workshopping in writing.

As someone who recently underwent the process herself, I have a personal and thorough understanding of what modern day college admissions is like. I was accepted to all three of the universities I applied to, and completed all of my applications without outside help. I spent last summer workshopping college essays for high school seniors from my school.

In addition, I'm currently in college, and I think that provides me with a unique viewpoint into the admissions process. At Stanford, I hold leadership positions in the Asian American, spoken word poetry community, and dance communities, while also maintaining a 4.1 GPA.

(NOTE: I don't have a car, so I'm only able to tutor on or around Stanford's campus)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I was a nationally ranked Speaker and Debater in high school, and competed in Original Oratory and Storytelling. I also worked extensively as president of my school's Forensics Society to help younger teammates develop robust public speaking skills. Some methods I use include facial expression and vocal affect mimicking, impromptu storytelling games, and exercises with hand gestures and expressive speaking.
