About Brandon

Bio

My name is Brandon and I'm more than happy to offer my services as a tutor. I graduated Class of 2001 at La Costa Canyon High School with a 3.5 GPA. I recently obtained my Associate's Degree in the Graphic Arts program at Stevens Henager College and made the honor roll and President's List in consecutive terms with 3.61 and 3.91 GPAs respectively. I'm now currently in the process of enrolling for their Bachelor's program.

I have a very patient personality with everyone I've known and exude this with my students. Thanks to my dad, I have a good sense of humor, both witty and sarcastic, which I try to use as much as possible.

My teaching style is breaking the elements down piece by piece to make everything understandable for those willing to invest their time; if you're looking for quick solutions I will delete your message. For those who are interested in mobile tutoring via Skype/Facetime, I'm definitely game. I'm as tech savvy as they come--I own an iPhone 5, iPad mini and MacBook Pro. I started on PC w/DOS and Windows 3.1 and still the only one I know of that's used Windows XP without a mouse should the occasion call for it.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me and I'll answer you as soon as possible. Thanks very much for taking your time to look at my profile.

Adobe InDesign,

Adobe InDesign

I have been using Adobe InDesign for a period of 2 years now and have earned my Associate's Degree in Graphic Arts. Recently, I made two ads for a client's business focused on anglophile art and he's been ecstatic with the designs I've made for him.
Graphic Design,

Graphic Design

I have been pursuing a graphic arts major at Stevens Henager College for the past 4 months. Last month, I passed Graphic Design 1 with an A- which included Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. For my final assessment in that class, I was required to create four different 5x5 projects showcasing the Big 4: contrast, repetition, alignment and proximity. I executed contrast and proximity in Photoshop, repetition in Illustrator and alignment in InDesign.
Photography,

Photography

I have 5 years experience in photography. Earlier this year, I started up a photography business. I'm still working on getting the main website up, but I've been expanding my portfolio plenty. I'm more than happy to share my skills with those willing to learn.

DOS,

DOS

I'm aware that DOS is lesser used nowadays since Windows is more and more popular, but for those of us who still like using cmd.exe, it's still around even in Windows 7. DOS can be advantageous since it's usable at all times and, lots of times, can be safer if you're trying to format your hard drive, separate it into partitions or the like. I'm more than happy to teach anyone how to use this text-based operating system.
Dreamweaver,

Dreamweaver

I currently have Dreamweaver CS5 and have used it many times to assist me in making websites in the past. I'll admit I do enjoy the user friendly interface of the program and how it streamlines the source code of what you're making very well. If you'd like to see an example of a page I've made with Dreamweaver, I'm more than happy to oblige.
General Computer,

General Computer

I have quite a bit of experience with the general computer as a whole--both PC and Mac. For PC, I've been using Windows since the 3.1 days and am familiar with 95, 98, XP and Vista. Haven't gotten to use Windows 7 much yet, but if it's at all similar to XP/Vista I shouldn't have any trouble with it. In regards to Mac, I've been using those ever since I was a sophmore in high school with the iMacs. I've been using Mac since the early OS and am very familiar with Leopard (Mac OS X) as well.

Macintosh,

Macintosh

Can't forget about the ever popular Mac of course. ;p Most of my graphic design classes--both in high school and college--have used Macs and, from what I've been exposed to on the OS, I'd have to say that it's the more business oriented one in terms of what you can do with it. I've been using Macs ever since 3rd-6th grade, so I'm well accustomed to how they function. Currently, I'm the most familiar with Mac's latest operating system which is Mac OS X as I mentioned in my general computer description. I do like how Apple and Microsoft are constantly competing with each other and how it influences them to do better and better. I look forward to having someone pick my brain regarding my knowledge of this operating system as well in the future.
Microsoft Windows,

Microsoft Windows

Ah...good ol' Microsoft Windows...where to begin. Well, first off, I've been using this OS ever since Windows 3.1 and have kept up with the upgrades up to the current Windows 7. I do like how they've simplified a lot of things as opposed to how clunky the old operating system was in the past. I know quite a few keyboard shortcuts even to the point where you'll be able to navigate your PC with just the keyboard alone if you so choose. A few examples of shortcuts include Ctrl+Esc which opens the Start Menu for ya and then there's also Shift+Tab which, if you're Tabbing through things, will bring you back a Tab as opposed to just having to Tab all the way back to where you want to be. If you'd like to pick my brain more, I'm more than welcome to teach you how to do these things.

Japanese,

Japanese

I have recently taken some Japanese classes at Palomar College. So far, I have passed the first two semesters both with Bs. I have a firm grasp on how to write the hiragana and katakana of the language properly. I can provide a written chart if need be to prove this. I'll admit I still struggle a bit on the kanji, but considering someone whose first language is English is trying to learn a picture language that part is usually not that easy considering the kanji can have quite different meanings depending on which ones they're paired with. I'm constantly expanding my repertoire in this area though and I've learned more and more with the 3rd semester I took. I plan on retaking it when I get a chance so that I can get a better grade.
Spanish,

Spanish

My experience with Spanish includes having a mom, grandma and quite a few Latino friends who are all fluent whom I practice with from time to time, but also having taken Spanish I through IV in my years in high school and passing them all with flying colors. I have a vast knowledge of this language, which I'd like to share with anyone who's willing to devote their time. If you'd like to delve a little more as to the exact details, please feel free to message me about it.

Chess,

Chess

Chess has been one of my favorite board games throughout my years and I know how to play the game very well. I can teach anyone how all the pieces on the board move and even some terms that can be applied to the game that some people might not usually take advantage of such as kingside and queenside castling and the en passant rule. I mainly enjoy playing for fun, but when I get enough practice in I might try my hands at a tournament. Back at La Costa Canyon, I used to be in a Chess Club and I still have the T-shirt to prove it. :) I look forward to teaching chess to students who want to get their feet wet and also further advanced players who want to refine their gameplay.
Poker

Poker

I've been playing poker for quite some time now and am very familiar with the hands that can be made, how to get them and also which type is more powerful in terms of getting the pot as opposed to others. The main type of poker I play is Texas Hold 'Em which is also the most popular. I've also played a bit of 5 card draw.

Brandon knows Macintosh!

Brandon helped me untangle and organize my photos on a MacBook Pro, freeing up tons of space in the hard drive. He was super helpful and patient with my lack of computer skill.

Very Thorough Teacher

My first lesson with Brandon included an introduction to Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. I liked the fact that he took the time to explain everything very thoroughly.

Great tutor....hard working and very patient...

I hired Brandon to try to get an elderly gentleman back onto his computer. Brandon was a very friendly, determined and gifted tutor (evidently in many areas), but I'm afraid his student was simply unable to grasp the necessary steps.....as easy as Brandon made it for him. We thank Brandon for his work and will contact him again immediately if the need arises!
