About Alysia

I'm a recent UC Berkeley graduate (I studied Linguistics and Education) and I have a lot of teaching and tutoring experience. I have experience and am comfortable working with all ages and skill levels, including students with disabilities and learning differences.

I've been working as an Undergraduate Writing Tutor at UC Berkeley for the past two years, and I've also spent the past two summers working as a Teacher for the Institute of Reading Development. Throughout high school and college I also regularly volunteered as a tutor with local Elementary Schools, Middle Schools, and High Schools. I have been trained extensively in tutoring Writing and teaching Reading and am especially good with Middle School through College aged students.

Let me know if you have any questions about me or my qualifications!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I worked as a teacher's assistant for several summers at an elementary school. I do a lot of babysitting for kids in this age range including homework help. I have also volunteered for many years with the Girl Scouts Girls Go Tech organization which strives to teach kids in this age range about STEM subjects.

Grammar

I studied and majored in Linguistics at UC Berkeley, and I've always been a big grammar nerd.

Proofreading

I've studied Linguistics, tutored writing, never received a grade below a B on a paper, and I genuinely love to read other people's writing and help them make tweaks so that they are able to communicate what they actually mean.

Reading

I worked two summers as a Reading Teacher with the Institute of Reading Development. I taught reading classes to all age levels (from 4 year olds to adults) and worked with all skill levels (from children who were just beginning to learn to read, to those looking to improve their comprehension, to people interested in speed reading techniques). I also just really love reading and always have. I enjoy talking about books and hearing different interpretations of texts.

Writing

I worked for two years as an undergraduate Writing Tutor at UC Berkeley in the Student Learning Center. I tutored my peers, attended weekly training seminars, and also mentored new tutors. I learned a ton of techniques to help writers improve and have experience working with many different learning styles.
