About Vance

I have over 30 years of experience in the graphic design and advertising. I have worked in both large agencies and small studios. I've had my work celebrated in graphic design annuals and advertising competitions.

I have taught graphic design, Illustrator, Photoshop and Improv at South Pasadena Middle School Summer School for the past 5 years.
I have written a lot of Social Media Posts, for which I've been celebrated on over ten Social Media Top 10 Lists.

For design projects, I teach a design process they can use no matter what the problem to solve. I have my students do research and primarily sketches before they ever reach for the computer, so they have a purpose for using the program.

Once on the program, I encourage students to explore and experiment to find the best solution for their design problem. I like to do a demonstration to start the learning process, them work with student one-on-one to better understand the power of the programs. In computer design, you really can't screw up. Everything if fixable. It's the journey to a great design that will serve students in the long run.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Graphic Design

I have over 30 years experience in Graphic Design, Advertising and Art Direction. I have taught Graphic Design, Photoshop and Illustrator for the past 5 years at South Pasadena Summer School Program. I teach students as if they are a designer dealing with a client. I give them a project, they teach them the process I go through to create for a client. I have students do research and sketches before they ever go to the program so they already have an idea and a reason to use the program. Once on the program, I present a demonstration and then work with students one on one. I encourage experimentation and exploration to get and idea of how powerful the programs are. You really can't screw up when designing on computer. Everything is possible and fixable. More than anything, I encourage students to have fun. I love of creating will carry them farther than anything else.

Theater

I studied Improv for 15 years. I have preformed with the legendary Groundlings Sunday Company, the springboard for many popular performers. I studied with the most important Improv teacher in Los Angeles Cynthia Szgeti for 10 years and was her designated substitute teacher.

I have performed Standup for 30 years. I ran a comedy room for 20 years that produced some of the biggest comedy stars: Zack Galifinakis, Maria Bamford & Chris Hardwick. I recently appeared Chris's Comedy Central show, @Midnight. I have taught Improv, Standup and Sketch writing in the South Pasadena Summer School for the past 5 years. My goal is with the students in not particularly to get laughs, because that is too much pressure. I want them to have fun and learn to be in front of people. In improv, you can't make a mistake. It's all for fun. Being able to express your ideas in front of people will serve a student their entire lives, no matter what industry they're in.
