About Cassie

I graduated from Cedarville University in Ohio with a BA in Language Arts Education. I'm licensed to teach English to 7-12 graders and have two years of teaching experience in an international school in Ukraine. I also currently work at Lakeview School, Durham County's alternative school. I teach all Middle School Language Arts classes at Lakeview (6-8 grades). I have taught English at all secondary levels, 6-12 grades. I also spent my two school years in Ukraine tutoring an elementary student in English language skills and study skills.

I am a fun teacher who shows a genuine care for my students, even beyond their academic achievement. I love to see students gain understanding in areas they've struggled in, and I love to help explain things and guide students to new levels of learning and even enjoyment of the things they are learning. I love reading, watching TV and movies, cats, good food, and spending time with my friends, family, and my husband.

I am a highly qualified English teacher with a teaching license in 7th-12th grade Language Arts. I achieved a 3.5 GPA in college, as well as outstanding scores on my Praxis II exams, which were required for my teaching licensure. I am an extremely hard worker, and that made me a great student and now makes me a great teacher and tutor, as I have a desire to see students succeed in any area in which they need help.

I'm excited to meet and work with many students and show them ways to improve their reading, writing, and study skills in a way that is relaxed, fun, and encouraging. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have a BA in Language Arts Education and three years of teaching experience (from 6th-12th grade). These qualifications give me the knowledge necessary to prepare a student for the ACT. Also, I achieved a composite score of 31 on the ACT when I was a high school student, so I am aware of the style of the test and can provide help in preparing students in that area as well.

ACT Reading

I have a BA in Language Arts Education and three years of teaching experience (from 6th-12th grade). These qualifications give me the knowledge necessary to prepare a student for the ACT. As an English teacher, much of what I do is to check and test students on their reading comprehension, at several levels of difficulty. Also, I achieved a composite score of 31 on the ACT when I was a high school student, so I am aware of the style of the test and can provide help in preparing students in that area as well.

Bible Studies

I received a minor in Bible from Cedarville University, with 16 Bible credits and a 4.0 GPA for the Bible minor portion of my degree. These classes gave me experience in both Old and New Testament survey, the study of various religions and worldviews, and knowledge in several Bible study methods and information. Additionally, in my years of teaching experience, I have taught one year of New Testament survey at a high school level. This course required not only the study of the Bible itself, but research and outside resources to provide students with deeper understanding of Biblical themes.

English

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Language Arts Education from Cedarville University. I have three years of teaching experience in English classes, including 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade English. I am qualified and passionate about teaching reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar.

Grammar

I have a BA in Language Arts Education, and two years teaching experience in 6th-12th grade English classes. In 8th and 9th grade English, I taught intensive grammar lessons (multiple times per week) and my college education required that I take both Fundamentals and Advanced English Grammar classes. In every English class I've taught, grammar instruction has come into play as students dissect literature, practice their writing, or simply learn better speaking or presenting skills.

Literature

I have a BA in Language Arts Education and three years of teaching experience in 6th-12th grade English classes. Each of these classes includes a heavy focus on Literature: reading, reading comprehension, analysis, and writing about literature. I love to read and analyze literature and to share that love for literature with others.

Proofreading

I have a BA in Language Arts Education and 3 years of teaching experience in 6th-12th grade. My college education required that I write various types of essays, including persuasive, descriptive, and analytical pieces. As a student, and now as a teacher, I've gained valuable experience proofreading, editing, and revising writing. I'll be able to offer great insight not only to the grammar and mechanics of a paper, but also its format and organization.

Writing

I have a BA in Language Arts Education and 3 years of teaching experience in 6th-12th grade English classes. My college courses required me to master several genres of writing, including persuasive and descriptive essays, analysis papers, and personal essays, such as memoirs. My teaching experience, additionally, has provided me the opportunity to teach writing at several different age levels and skill levels, which makes me highly qualified to help most students with their writing needs.

Great tutor. Both of my kids like her a lot.

She tutors English for my rising 10th and 9th grade boys. From parents' perspective, she is flexible, punctual and dependable. She has a great personality and bonded with my kids pretty quickly. Kids tell me that she is organized and focused but patient and fun.
