My name is Timothy S. Call me Tim. My field is skill-based, representational art, with a concentration on the fundamentals of drawing and painting. After receiving my MFA degree from Laguna College of Art and Design in 2013, I have created a plethora of work for galleries, museums and written publications, including a solo show at Copro Gallery in Bergamot Station. My complex, large-scale oil paintings employ observational techniques and figurative studies to create a sense of movement and multiple perspective.
In addition to professional exhibitions, I have also pursued a career in academia. Sharing artistic knowledge with others is one of my greatest joys in life.
At California State University of Los Angeles, I taught a drawing fundamentals class that covered contour, shading, perspective, figure drawing and composition. I have worked with students coming from all levels of experience, and I know how to direct my group lessons and individual coaching to achieve the best results.
At Laguna College of Art and Design, I was the assistant instructor of a still life painting class called Fundamentals of Composition and Color. As part of my MFA studies, I learned the language of pedagogy, creating syllabi and lesson plans for just about every fundamental drawing or painting class. I will continue to teach there this Fall, and increasingly become more involved in the program development.
Although my gallery work is stylized with a strong narrative context, the painting is rooted in foundational academic techniques. I believe that learning skills is the most important part of an artistic education. In my personal work, I continue to utilize everything taught to me at LCAD, from working with live models to compositional studies. I believe that having good drawing skills is the basis of all art, and every student should be fortunate enough to have a teacher who is as passionate about it as I am.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
