About Lynn

I am an experienced, credentialed teacher! I have more than ten years' experience in teaching and tutoring students in all grades, including college-level! My teaching experience has been in the elementary grades at the traditional schools. I taught first, third, and fourth grades. In an online K-8 school I taught primarily math to students in grades six through eight. I love math and science but am comfortable teaching and tutoring English, literature, composition (writing), health, social studies, and some art.

I work with each student individually to provide the most effective, useful methods for that student. I find the learning style most familiar to each student so that I can create lessons to fit that style. My goal is to develop a connection with each student so that the time spent tutoring is valuable. Being a parent myself has really opened my eyes to the needs of the individual student, and I will work tirelessly to meet your student's needs!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

In my 10 years teaching, I have had three students that were dealing with dyslexia. I worked with their families, the special education experts, and the student to develop the most effective strategies for each particular student. I am not a special education teacher, but have done extensive research in this area to help these students. I continue to learn more about dyslexia as it interests me and because many of the strategies used to help students with this condition can be helpful to all students.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a California Certified teacher for grades K-8.

Phonics

Phonics are essential for students learning to read. I have taught first grade for 3 years and fully appreciate the value of phonics and phonemic awareness. Students who are struggling in phonics need practice along with alternative methods to better understand how letters and combinations of letters make sounds and spell words.

Study Skills

Study skills are a major part of classroom teaching. I have taught grades 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8. Each grade requires its own set of study skills. I have also tutored students from 4th grade up to college level, so spending time sharpening study skills is essential. Students at times understand the content but not how to test on it, so we practice test strategies, along with ways to read and comprehend content so that students can be successful in their academics.
