About April

Hi there!

Since I was seven years old, I knew that I wanted to dedicate my life to teaching. I possess an enthusiasm and passion for learning, and I'd love to share that enthusiasm with you!

I've been working as a private tutor for over ten years, so I have lots of experience in all subject areas. I've worked with all kinds of people, from very young children just learning their letters to adults in their 50s looking for a new career. I specialize in individually based instruction that is formulated around my students' needs. This means that no matter what your learning style is or what difficulties you have, I will find a way to help you learn!

Over the years, I've been fortunate enough to work with families who have many different needs. I understand how frustrating school and learning can be. I want to help alleviate that frustration by building on your strengths, while working on your areas of need. I consider myself to be fairly tenacious. I truly believe that everyone can learn! I will do everything I can, even if it means trying a plethora of different techniques, to help you find what works best for you.

I use a combination of tools to help my students, from games to technology to manipulatives. I will supply you with an array of learning aids that will help you in whichever area you're struggling. I am very flexible because I understand how crazy life can be. I will do my very best to make our schedules work together.

As far as what I teach, as I've said I have taught pretty much everything. In the elementary grades, I teach reading from the ground up, working on phonics, word recognition, reading strategies, and comprehension. As children grow, their approach to reading should change, so I provide suggestions for older children who are struggling as well. Because reading is so very important, my main priority is to help children develop a love of reading. After all, books can take us anywhere we want to go!

Because I'm a fellow of the Pennsylvania Writing and Literature Project, literacy is something that is near and dear to my heart. Speaking of literacy, we can't forget about writing! I love to write, and I help my students enjoy it too. Whether it be story writing, speech writing, essays, poetry, or research, I feel it's important to develop strong writing abilities. My approach to writing includes understanding grammar and conventions, as well as guiding my students to improving their writing and developing their personal voice.

In the area of math, I teach all concepts of math for the elementary grades, and I absolutely love it! If you are someone who is afraid of fractions or numbers just don't make any sense at all, you definitely want to work with me! I was a struggling math student as a youngster, but now math is an all-time favorite subject of mine to teach!

In addition to these subjects, I also teach many different skills, including organization, listening comprehension, note taking, studying, and strategies for dealing with disorders or learning differences. Not only that, but I am big on building self esteem. Encouragement is a must for a learner!

With the older grades, I continue to address note taking, study, and organizational skills. I teach how to use technology to better help a student succeed. I provide tools and instruction in every subject area, including language arts, geometry, pre-algebra, algebra 1 and 2, trigonometry, social studies, science, and Spanish. I can provide guidance for older students who are applying to private high schools by preparing for the SSAT or ISSE and aiding with the essay writing process. I can provide support with the college application/SAT/ACT process as well. My main goal is to help reduce the stress of both middle and high school, which are crucial transitional times in a young person's life. I try to provide quality instruction while also being a good role model.

Aside from academics, I have also worked with individuals who possess a variety of learning needs. I have experience with children who have ADD, ADHD, ODD, OCD, Non-specified learning disorder, dyslexia, PDD, autism, Asberger's Syndrome, fetal alcohol syndrome, emotional disorder, hearing and visually impaired, and visual and auditory processing issues. When a child struggles with a learning difference, life alone can be challenging. Add school into the mix, and learning can be a nightmare. Regardless of your needs, I can help you be successful. I can help you understand. I can help you learn!

If you haven't yet been able to tell, I am quite passionate about what I do. Teaching is such an amazing job, and I hope you'll allow me to help you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

Are you someone who struggles with studying? Do you have a hard time understanding what you read? Is it tough for you to choose books that are on your level or that interest you? Do you have difficult time with writing because the rules are confusing or you just don't like writing at all? Does anything math related completely have you stumped? Does homework make you feel completely frustrated? Do you have a hard time remembering to turn in your assignments? Are your evenings at home horrible because homework and studying are just too much?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then maybe what you need is one-on-one help! Though the word "tutor" can be embarrassing, I'm here to tell you that you are not alone! Lots of people need someone to help them through school. All of our brains work differently, so we're bound to have difficulties sometimes when we're learning something new. And that's where I come in! I am a certified teacher who has dedicated her life to helping children just like you be successful! I can help math, reading, writing, science, social studies, studying, taking notes, doing research, and learning how to deal with frustration all make sense! And believe it or not, after just one hour with me, you might even grow to love learning and see me as a valuable resource! I do my very best to answer any question you have, no matter how silly it may seem. There's never any judgment from me, and I promise you, taking the first step to get the right person to help you is going to make all the difference for you! Not only will I be able to help you, but you're going to have fun too! Are you ready to feel confident and smarter than you ever have before?

Hello there! One of the most important things that all children need to learn is how to read. Some children are lucky, and for those individuals reading comes as naturally as speaking. For other children, however, learning to read is a daunting, insurmountable challenge. That's where I come in. Learning to read is a very personal and unique experience. I can help a child go from barely knowing her alphabet to learning how to put sounds together to make words. And from there, I can teach her how those words form sentences, and how the sentences make stories! And it all begins with phonics.

I think phonics are essential for children who struggle with reading. By combining sounds, reference words, and pictures, I can help your child build a "backpack" of knowledge that will help her be an independent reader. I use a number of techniques, including "sound" flashcards that we create together, written activities, games, puzzles, sight words, rhymes, and of course, real literature. I will teach your child strategies for reading--not just decoding words, but other ways for figuring out what a word might be. I celebrate success and am constantly working to help your child learn more than what she ever thought was possible. On top of everything else, I pair phonics with comprehension, because, let's face it. What's the point of reading if you don't understand what you've read? Best of all, we have fun during our sessions! If you have a reluctant or struggling reader, don't hesitate to contact me. I'm here to help you!

Special Needs

Just like the world is filled with a wide variety of colors that make it the beautiful place it is, human beings come in a variety of packages. Because there are so many different kinds of people, there are bound to be all kinds of learning differences within those people. Dealing with those learning differences can certainly be tricky, especially if you're expected to learn things just like everyone else. If you or your child is a person with learning differences, I may be someone who can help you!

I've been working with children for a very long time, and in my experience I have worked with all kinds of special needs. From ADD, ADHD, ODD, OCD, autism, PDD, Asberger's Syndrome, dyslexia, fetal alcohol syndrome, non-specified learning disability, visual/auditory processing, and emotional disorders to highly gifted children, I have helped numerous families with children who have special needs. I believe that all children can learn, no matter what their difficulties may be,and I am more than willing to go above and beyond to help your child succeed. I use a variety of techniques, all individually based. Everything from tactile tools, technology, and games to note taking and study skills are taught to help your child succeed and survive during his/her academic journey. Please contact me if you have a child with special needs. I'm here to help you.

Wonderful Assessment!

April was friendly and impressive. She was great with our daughter and used plenty of positive reinforcement and several different activities to asses where Sophie was at on her own. We loved her overall attitude, her substantial background of experiences to draw from, and her interactive energy with our daughter who came home and immediately wanted to continue what April had gone over at the asse
