Ranked as Top 1% of Wyzant Tutors in 2019

I have been tutoring all levels of Math for the past 10 years, from Algebra through college Calculus. I believe that establishing a good foundation in Mathematics is critical for a student’s future success and confidence – in high school, in college and beyond in their careers. And I believe every student has the potential to be successful with Math. I can help by explaining Math concepts in simple ways the student can understand and remember. And I do so in a positive, patient and encouraging manner.

I am a graduate of Stanford and Harvard. While I studied engineering and business, I have enjoyed Math since grade school when I was selected for experimental programs in Symbolic Logic and a new form of Algebra.

My Philosophy is that mathematics provides a critical foundation for other learning. Young people can grasp advanced concepts early on. Creative approaches to Mathematics education that work well for gifted students can help students of all levels and backgrounds succeed in Math. Each student is special and unique, and deserves a tailored approach.

I have had the privilege of working with students as young as 6, as well as students in middle school and high school. As a result of my tutoring my students have excelled in the following ways:

- Finishing 7th grade Pre-Algebra as young as 8.
- Completing Honors Precalculus as young as 11.
- Earning A+100% in Geometry at Stanford's highly rigorous Online High School.
- Earning the highest grades in class for Calculus 1 and 2.
- Taking Calculus 5 at age 14 at junior college while concurrently enrolled in high school.
- I am especially proud that some of the students mentioned above did not start out believing they were “good at Math.”

Gifted and Struggling Have Something in Common. I have found that those who want to go very high and those who are struggling to keep up are actually very similar in this: both need concepts made clear and simple -- to grasp and build upon.

Additional Insight:
- In-depth knowledge of computer-based instruction.
- Detailed familiarity with respected curricula.
- Researched and sought out highly effective and innovative approaches.
- Successful with public, private and home-schooled students.

I look forward to helping you or your student succeed!

Homeschool

I have worked with many homeschool students over 10 years succeed to the point of being admitted to top universities. Many of these were able to follow an accelerated path, especially in mathematics, due to the individual attention and the encouragement that their progress knows no limits. One was admitted to UC Berkeley at 15, graduated at 17 and got her masters in applied mathematics at 19. I understand the special opportunity that homeschooling offers and know how to equip and inspire the independent learner.

For many, Algebra I & II is where the struggles begin. But it need not be scary and difficult. Often times the issue is with earlier concepts that were not mastered with confidence. Knowledgeable and Kind

Tim did a fantastic job teaching my son math concepts he was struggling with. My son ended the session feeling confident and happy! I’m very satisfied with the tutoring and am ecstatic about the results. Thank you!

Great, knowledgeable tutor!

Tim was great and went over some hard problems with my son, exploring different solution paths and outlining the best approaches to tackle them. I particularly appreciated the post-lesson summary that he sent, with a list of the topics that were covered and all notes from the lesson, so that my son was able to go back to them when reviewing.

Great tutor!

I worked with Tim for a decent period of time and over the months he was able to teach me a variety of concepts in a way I understood. He is extremely smart and is able to explain things in a way that the student will understand. If you are confused, he will explain it in another way that is easier for you to grasp. From Algebra to Trig, Tim is extremely capable of effectively teaching math and sometimes he can even make it seem fun.

Kind and Patient - Neat Teaching Technique

Tim was a really cool guy to work with. He took a couple minutes to figure out how I learn best and then based our tutoring session on that. I am a visual learner and sometimes I need to see the big picture to understand things, especially mathematics. Tim color coded (which I absolutely LOVE) everything in such a way that it made the concepts easier for me to understand and to recognize the important takeaways from what I am learning. This may not be true for everyone, but I also enjoyed that he took his notes by hand. That’s the way I take my notes so seeing someone work with me that way was comforting. It is a cool setup he has going for anyone who likes to learn that way or needs visual aids. Amazing tutor, will definitely be scheduling with him again.

The best!

I was out of the country and I was already behind in my Precalculus class. He helped me through it and explained everything in a way that I could understand. He was really great at what he's doing and he was really patient and very considerate!!!

Hazzel Leigh, 1 lesson with Tim

Perfect 1st meeting

Tim listened to what my needs were to pass the GMAT and we created a plan of action to meet my very time restricted goals. We covered the basics of geometry as it pertains to the test and different levels of problem complexity. I didn't feel overwhelmed, or intimidated at all and instead felt empowered by what I learned in my session.

Great Tutor!

Tim had access to the same text book used in the classroom, so it was very helpful to practice using the resources in the book for the lesson. He was knowledgeable and patient. My son learned a lot and gained confidence.

Thorough, Patient, Easy to understand

I am preparing for my final in Pre-Calculus/Trig. Tim was an excellent choice and I highly recommend him. This is my first lesson and I already have gained some skills I can use to complete my work faster and more efficiently. He is very willing, listens well, and cared enough about my needs to ask questions and tailor my lesson to help me work on my weak areas. I am looking forward to working with him again!

Phenomenal

We appreciated Tim because he first reviewed the learning style with the student before the first tutoring lesson. Also, asked the current interests in subjects to gage the student’s background. He is a versatile tutor who really tailors the lesson for the student. Great for gifted kids! Thank you, Tim, and we are glad to have him for AP Calculus preparation!

Knowledgeable and friendly

Super helpful, clear and concise! Was able to connect quickly with my son. Will definitely use him for my next teenager up for the SAT! He had a good flow to the lesson.
