I have been tutoring all levels of Math for the past 10 years, from Algebra through college Calculus. I believe that establishing a good foundation in Mathematics is critical for a student’s future success and confidence – in high school, in college and beyond in their careers. And I believe every student has the potential to be successful with Math. I can help by explaining Math concepts in simple ways the student can understand and remember. And I do so in a positive, patient and encouraging manner.

I am a graduate of Stanford and Harvard. While I studied engineering and business, I have enjoyed Math since grade school when I was selected for experimental programs in Symbolic Logic and a new form of Algebra.

My Philosophy is that mathematics provides a critical foundation for other learning. Young people can grasp advanced concepts early on. Creative approaches to Mathematics education that work well for gifted students can help students of all levels and backgrounds succeed in Math. Each student is special and unique, and deserves a tailored approach.

I have had the privilege of working with students as young as 6, as well as students in middle school and high school. As a result of my tutoring my students have excelled in the following ways:

- Finishing 7th grade Pre-Algebra as young as 8.
- Completing Honors Precalculus as young as 11.
- Earning A+100% in Geometry at Stanford's highly rigorous Online High School.
- Earning the highest grades in class for Calculus 1 and 2.
- Taking Calculus 5 at age 14 at junior college while concurrently enrolled in high school.
- I am especially proud that some of the students mentioned above did not start out believing they were “good at Math.”

Gifted and Struggling Have Something in Common. I have found that those who want to go very high and those who are struggling to keep up are actually very similar in this: both need concepts made clear and simple -- to grasp and build upon.

Additional Insight:
- In-depth knowledge of computer-based instruction.
- Detailed familiarity with respected curricula.
- Researched and sought out highly effective and innovative approaches.
- Successful with public, private and home-schooled students.

Before tutoring, I had a career in international business during which I also served on the side as trainer and consultant. I enjoy helping others learn -- whether it be to grasp new concepts or to relearn something that previously had been difficult. One of my greatest interests and joys is helping students achieve their goals in learning.

I look forward to helping you or your student succeed!

History

American History,

American History

American history is one of my favorite subjects. My family has deep roots in the history of our country going back to colonial times and extending out to homesteading in the Midwest and to the Gold Rush days of California. I grew up hearing stories from these different time periods. I love to share that perspective with my students as we establish ways to know and remember history. I also offer experience preparing students for the AP US History exam.
World History,

World History

Besides studying World History on the side at university and then doing my own study and reading ever since, I have experienced first hand the "living history" that one can pick up by traveling, exploring and talking with and living with local people. In the course of my work, I have traveled to over 30 countries - in Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East, and have lived in four of them for cumulative nearly 10 years. I have also tutored for the AP World History Exam as well as for courses in pre- and post-1600 World History.

For many, Algebra I & II is where the struggles begin. But it need not be scary and difficult. Often times the issue is with earlier concepts that were not mastered with confidence. I will help by explaining concepts in plain English. And I help students to learn to see concepts and problems in a way that makes sense to them.

Calculus,

Calculus

Everyone can learn Calculus. It’s a great tool and a big confidence booster when you can master this subject. The concepts behind Calculus are actually simple and few in number. But they are often introduced in ways that seem complex and confusing. I will help explain the concepts and terms in simple English and with everyday examples.

Geometry,

In a sense, Geometry is misnamed. On the surface, it appears to be focused on angles, lines, polygons, circles and arcs and how they relate. But at the heart of the subject is a Greek system of logic. Understanding this and how it works is the key to mastering Geometry.

Really Relates to Teens

Tim gets so much accomplished with my 16 year old. In early session, found his strength and weaknesses and tailored lessons for him. Great Tutor! Both Math and English SAT. My son came home from SAT and pinged Tim, I think that enough tells you how well the lessons went!

Helped me reach my goal!

Tim helped me prepare for the August SAT in the Summer of 2017. Because of his commitment to my success, I was able to score a perfect 800 in the Math Section of the SAT! We spent 4.5 hours each week reviewing for the Reading and Math section through video chat. He made sure I understood the solutions, and carefully explained each question that was unclear to me. I would like to thank Tim for being so supportive and helping me reach my goal.

Anil, 22 lessons with Tim

Patient GRE tutor

Extremely patient! He allows the student to solve the problem and reaches different ways of solving things. He provides very good notes.

Beatriz, 7 lessons with Tim

Experienced and caring tutor

Tim was thorough and patient in explaining how to approach math problems on the ACT, which is the most challenging aspect of test taking for my daughter. He was able to establish a rapport with her quickly, and she is looking forward to working with Tim going forward.

Beth, 7 lessons with Tim

Very helpful and patient

Explained things thoroughly and visually. Calculus is complicated but he broke it down to the very basics. Lessons he sends after the session about everything you did are also nice

Dawne, 1 lesson with Tim

Worth every penny!

There are many great things about Tim. After going through many tutors my son said, Tim actually taught me a lot. He is very knowledgeable and after the class is over you will get an email with all the notes from that class so you can study. My son enjoys his classes very much.

Monica, 8 lessons with Tim

Great tutor and easy to work with

Tim helped my daughter study for the ACT test. While my daughter does well in Math and Science, Tim has helped her believe in herself to the point of going for a perfect score! That would be awesome! Thanks Tim for your support, encouragement, and help. This has been a great experience for my daughter. She now knows what it takes to be a great tutor!

Cathy, 7 lessons with Tim

Always encouraging and patient.

Great follow up with written notes the day after the lesson. He's helping my daughter pass a junior-senior level course when she is only a freshman. Because Tim knows so much in so many subjects, you can book an hour and he can help your student with multiple classes depending on their weekly needs. I would recommend Tim to any student.

Sallie, 20 lessons with Tim

Tim does great work

Can't stress enough how appreciative I am that Tim is so patient. He has helped me a lot on my preparation for the GRE, and has helped me a lot in becoming more confident in my math skills.

Erik, 18 lessons with Tim

Patient and positive teaching style!

My son is a high school junior and needed to prepare for the SAT Math II. This was very challenging, with a short time to prepare. Although we're still waiting for the results, my son took the test confidently. Another result of the 8 weeks of tutoring with Tim, he was able to bring his Pre-Calc grade up from a B to a final A!
