About Todd

With the increasing trend of globalization and access to different cultures and opportunities around the world it is imperative that students also expand the boundaries of what they know and have access to.

Is it so easy to forget there are more than just a handful of people each person interacts with in any given day. However the world is getting smaller every day and if our students are not prepared to face all the challenges then they will be at a disadvantage. Through this understanding I chose to focus my interest and teach in Japan where I could learn about its people and language. My major in college was in Asian Studies with an emphasis on Japanese and interests in public speaking and vocal performance. When I graduated I took my learning and put it to the test by getting a teaching job in Japan through the JET program. I learned and taught in Hyogo-ken for 4 years before returning to the U.S. to support family and reconnect with relatives.

Now after 8 years of study and on-the-ground experience I am happy to share that which I learned during my travels. I believe that the deepest and most meaningful information is only ever communicated at the personal 1 on 1 level. When communicating at this level a person must be humble, genuine, careful to listen, slow to anger, and loving. I feel the same about tutoring but with the addition that professionalism is made a prime value.

This philosophy leads to several milestones throughout the process of (in this case) education which I have developed during my time teaching students in Japan. My approach is as follows: Plan: Ask relevant questions and listen to determine the needs of the student. Organize: Seek the best interest of the student and apply an organized structure to guide future lessons. Develop: Observe what is truly of interest to a student and adjust your teaching to include the student. Cycle: Check progress and prepare to make a pivot to course correct if any is needed.

As a world traveler with an interest in business, I have gradually focused my attention to the point where I am building a bilingual company in northern California that serves Japanese travelers for the purpose of hospitality and education. My company is founded on foundational biblical principles and serves to focus underlying integrity of its operation. I am happy to bring the opportunity for intercultural exchange that my business provides to my local community. While the company is my work, I enjoy taking time outside of work to expand the interests of cross cultural connections, through tutoring.

In an seeking avenues to enrich the community and share my globetrotting experiences I was directed to wyzant.com. I found that was a need for a Japanese language tutor and so submitted an application. I am currently returning home from an academic year abroad in Ireland with my wife and we look forward to developing lasting relationships in our new locality.

During my time in Japan I was introduced to an enormous body of Japanese writing, cultural sayings, and regional personalities. The biggest hurdle for me to overcome was in navigating the mode of communication between outsiders, like myself, and native Japanese. I found that the best way for me to do this was to be embrace the foreignness, always be genuine, and never stop trying. This is the same spirit that drives me to achieve and build a business and a life that fruitful and produces value for people and between people. I love to use my knowledge to expand the horizons of friends and students. I look forward to working with you to grow our unique characteristics, share meaningful exchanges, and express our own ideas in new and enriching ways.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
