As an assistant speech and debate coach for ten years, and a public high school English teacher for over 5 years, I gained extensive knowledge developing the reading, writing and thinking skills in students of all academic levels. My lessons are structured, engaging, and relevant to students' interests and ability levels. I strive to maintain a warm, sympathetic, yet disciplined relationship with my students that provides the environment they need to get caught up and to thrive.
For the past year, I have tutored K-12 students, primarily K-6 students, and have successfully tutored these students to improve their academic confidence, problem-solving skills, and their overall attitude toward learning and academic tasks. I've had successful tutoring relationships with students performing below grade-level in reading and math and helped these students to get on track to being independent and active learners. I utilize assessment and standards-based approaches (and a lot of in-the-moment creativity) to strengthen students' skills and abilities. More importantly, I listen to and study my students closely in the context of our sessions' activities to guide my instructional approach and goals for their individual needs.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I majored in English with Honors in college and am a California Credentialed English teacher. I taught high school English for over 5 years.
While in college, I tutored ESL students (very often newcomers to America) and helped them with their English essays. I taught ELD4 (ELLs at the Intermediate-Advanced level) for 5 years as a high school English teacher. I attended numerous professional development conferences that focused on theory and instructional practices for teaching ESL/ELD during my time as a teacher. In particular, I attended seminars taught by ESL/ELD forerunners, Stephen Krashen and Kate Kinsella and earned college credit for completing coursework relating to those seminars.
I graduated from Cal State Northridge, Magna Cum Laude, from an Honors program in English/Literature. I also have a CA Single-Subject English Teaching Credential. I taught high school English for 6 years.

I taught high school English for 6 years. During this time I spent countless hours proofreading speeches, essays and other writing -- not only my own writing (personal and professional), but also the writing of hundreds of students and peers.
I also currently work as a transcriber (past 6 months), transcribing primarily criminal/legal files. I prepare transcripts of interviews of suspects and witnesses to be used by lawyers in preparation for court proceedings. The reports I prepare follow a specific style guidelines and need to proofread extensively before submission.
I competed in high school speech and debate in primarily oratorical/platform events, and was a state champion and national finalist in original oratory. For ten years, I was an assistant high school speech and debate coach for one of the largest teams in nation, that was also one of the top 5 teams in California. I coached original oratory and expository speaking mostly, and interpretation and debate events from time to time. I have coached numerous state champions and finalists and national finalists during my time as a coach.
I have tutored several students in reading and the various components to strengthen reading and fluency skills (vocabulary, phonics, spelling, and reading comprehension). Most of these students were significantly behind grade level proficiency, and frankly hated reading. Through working with me, they were able to improve their attitude, reading scores, work habits significantly. Also, as a past high school English teacher, I taught active reading/literacy strategies and became well-versed with the challenges, often starting in elementary school, that can contribute to reading hardships later on in school and life.

During this time, I attended numerous professional conferences and district-held trainings to develop my skills as a professional in many areas, but certainly in the area of vocabulary development for students. Notably, I attended the CABE conference twice, seminars led by Kathleen Kenfield, Stephen Krashen, and Kate Kinsella -- leaders in Language Arts, Vocabulary and Engish Language Acquisition and Development theories and practices. I also completed and submitted coursework to Chapman University for these conferences to demonstrate application and mastery of concepts learned.
I have tutored several students in writing -- K-6, all needing help with all facets of writing, mostly generating ideas, starting writing, and brainstorming. I've also worked with these students to develop their ideas, including examples, using details and showing not telling, and finally, with the syntax, grammar, and overall writing style. I have helped many students overcome their "negative attitude" to writing as well, and helped them to approach it with less stress and dread. Also, having taught and tutored high school English and being an English major I have much experience with writing formal academic essays and narratives.
