If you're seeking support with college counseling, English reading/writing, Latin language, and SAT/ACT/ISEE test prep, you are in the right place!

My education is in Classics (Bachelor's and Master's from Johns Hopkins in Baltimore) and my experience is in both classroom teaching and professional independent college counseling. I have worked in all sorts of communities: in the Pennsylvania mountains; by the beach in California; in urban Baltimore; in rural northern Maryland; with students online, who are sometimes in other countries. All the students I worked with had a big thing in common: They wanted to succeed, but they lost steam when they didn't have the tools to work confidently. I made it my goal to give students confidence, patient guidance, and specific feedback so they could do their best work and stand out when they eventually submitted their college applications.

TEACHING/TUTORING: ENGLISH
The best way to learn to write is to read, a lot, and then talk about that reading. I make sure all my students are challenging themselves with their reading, retaining new vocabulary, and responding to literature with thoughtfulness and depth. I assign prompts and review the student's writing with an eye to their individual growth. I discuss grammar, syntax, and word roots to help students think constructively about language. I take into account what is happening in the student's classroom at school, so that I can be the most supportive with the current curriculum. I also help them supplement the school's curriculum, so they can be ahead of the game.

TEACHING/TUTORING: Latin
Teaching the ancient tongue -- Latin, the language of the Romans -- is my first love. I remember fondly my days reading ancient authors in the Johns Hopkins library. I especially enjoy teaching Latin to students who are brand new to the language, since it allows me to help lay the foundation for a rewarding experience with Latin. I tend to bring a lot of excitement to my Latin sessions! It's a lot of fun for me.

COLLEGE COUNSELING
By taking proactive steps to prepare for application and making careful choices based on their goals and college preferences, my college counseling students have attended top schools like Dartmouth, Williams, Harvey Mudd, Duke, USC, and UC Berkeley. (Full list available by request.) As a college counselor, I guide students in grades 9-12 toward college applications with the eye of a seasoned classroom teacher. I use proven techniques based on research in education to provide ways forward that sound less like "be better" and more like "be authentic." When the time comes to complete the application, my students have solid habits of mind and they never need to phone in a college essay. When students finish working with me, they go on to their next steps confident that they've built skills for navigating a complicated world. Very often, my students attend their dream colleges, because they truly are the young people the colleges saw in the application.

Great High school application essays tutor

Robert was absolutely brilliant in helping both my son and I with high school application essays. We found him to be extremely patient, courteous, responsive and insightful. He seemed to understand really well what the questions/prompts were getting at and advised on different ways of responding. Quite frankly, we would not have been able to approach the quality of deliverables without his input. Robert is quite a star. I thoroughly recommend him!

Great Latin Tutor

Robert is a great tutor. He is reliable and knows his material. He really takes the time to explain the subject matter to my son who is a junior in high school taking Honors Latin 3. My only regret is that we didn't find him earlier.
