About Nena

ENGLISH, READING, WRITING, & HUMANITIES: With an undergrad joint degree in English and art history and two years in law school, I am well trained to teach you how to effectively use and understand language. I've presented papers at academic conferences, and I'm a moot court champion. I can guide you through challenging literature, help you compose strong essays, prepare you for debates, or teach you how to think critically about literature, art, law, theory, and philosophy. I adore teaching in part because I love the subjects I teach, but also because it's so rewarding to see students become excited about the material and succeed in challenging classes. I haven't yet had a student who didn't enjoy and greatly benefit from their time with me. I've been told many times by students and parents that they wished I taught at their school!

COLLEGE COUNSELING: In addition to my stellar academic background, I have experience working in the admissions office of a prestigious college. I can help you stand out to the college of your dreams. With my excellent writing and interpersonal skills, I can assist you not only in crafting your perfect (and totally unique) college essay, but also prepare for the most important interview of your life. I aim to help students gain an edge in the competitive world of college admissions, but I'm also well-equipped and eager to help you discover your best collegiate "fit."

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I teach my students very specific tactics for writing timed five-paragraph essays quickly and effectively. I give them basic frameworks that they can apply to many standardized tests--including AP tests, and the SAT, ACT, and LSAT--so that they can knock out a near-perfect essay without losing any time.

Since 2008, I've helped dozens of high school students to prepare for the ACT English, Reading, and Essay sections. My students have shown great improvement in their scores, and even greater improvement in their essay writing.

College Counseling

I've been working as a private college counselor since 2009. In the 2015-2016 academic year, all of my students gained admission to their first-choice colleges. Two were admitted to Columbia, one to Yale, Johns Hopkins, three to Berkeley, and several to other UCs and private institutions.

I began work in this field as an interviewer in the Office of Admission at Occidental College, where I wrote evaluations of prospective students for the dean's reference. Since then, I have worked as a private college counselor. I can assist students in finding appropriate colleges to apply to, writing strong and unique personal statements, and preparing for interviews.

Students have thanked me for helping them identify and put forward their best qualities, and parents have been thrilled with my results.

English

As an editor, writer, and law student, I understand the value of precise language. To that end, I help students expand their vocabularies, learn to properly execute a sentence using words new to them, organize their writing in a logical manner, and develop a strong voice that will stay with readers. My goal is to help students write about subject matter in a way that faithfully expresses their thoughts and ideas.

Grammar

I work as a professional editor, having edited a historico-legal book, two novels, one art theory book, and several shorter pieces including essays, articles, creative works, personal statements, and cover letters.

I know grammar rules like the back of my hand, and I'm able to communicate my knowledge effectively to students of various ages and levels.

ISEE

I have prepared dozens of students for the verbal portion of the ISEE. The prep work includes learning a great deal of vocabulary and Greek and Latin roots, as well as practicing reading comprehension, timed essay writing, and test taking skills.

I further teach my students very specific tactics for writing timed five-paragraph essays quickly and effectively. I give them basic frameworks that they can apply to many standardized tests--including AP tests, and the SAT, ACT, and LSAT--so that they can knock out a near-perfect essay without losing any time.

My students' scored improved significantly, and their essays improved by leaps and bounds.

Literature

I have an academic background in English and comparative literature, and I have presented my work at national conferences. I can assist middle- and high-school students as well as college students to understand, interpret, and write about literature. This is my greatest passion, and I have a gift for inspiring that same passion in my students.

Proofreading

I work as a freelance editor, and so far I have edited two novels, one politico-historical expository book, one art theory book, and several shorter pieces of expository and creative writing. I can also teach writers of all ages to proof their own work by building their command of the English language and its rules.

Public Speaking

As a decorated public speaker, I have worked with 23 public speaking students of various levels in the last four years. Most of my students are in the 10-18 age range and are involved in Speech & Debate. Depending on the student's needs, I can focus my lessons on researching and writing speeches and arguments, memorization tactics, and/or effective delivery.

Most recently, I was the moot court champion at my law school, which is a very prestigious honor earned after participating in six rounds judged by law professors. In high school, I was a Lincoln-Douglass debate champion. I furthermore acted as a student spokesperson for my college under the title of Alumni Ambassador.

Reading

I have an academic background in English and comparative literature, and I have presented my work at national conferences. I can assist middle- and high-school students as well as college students to understand, interpret, and write about literature, no matter how complex. This is my passion!

I teach my students specific, time-proven methods to improve their reading comprehension and speed so that they are able to make marked progress with a skill that is often difficult to improve.

SAT Reading

I've helped dozens of high school students to prepare for the SAT Reading and Writing sections. I teach my students specific, time-proven methods to improve their reading comprehension and reading speed so that they are able to make marked progress on one of the most challenging sections to advance on.

SAT Writing

I've helped several high school students to prepare for the SAT Reading and Writing sections. My students have shown great improvement in their scores, and even greater improvement in their essays.

I give them basic frameworks that they can apply to many standardized tests--including AP tests, and the SAT, ACT, and LSAT--so that they can knock out a near-perfect essay without losing time.

Spelling

By teaching students root words as well as prefixes and suffixes, I can help them figure out how words should be spelled--and what they mean--without memorizing those words.

Vocabulary

As a writer and former law student, I understand the value of precise language, which can only be achieved with an expansive vocabulary. It's impossible to articulate without the right words, so a broad vocabulary is essential. As an academic coach, I help my students learn words that are sometimes common, sometimes uncommon, but never archaic and out-of-use. I help students understand a word's entire semantic field (connotation as well as denotation), and how to properly use that word in context.
