Middlebury College (History and Theater)
New York University (Master's)
I love learning and have been very fortunate to have had a multitude of great teachers in my life. From attending public school in New Jersey, to an elite private high school in Ohio, to Middlebury College, Vermont (currently ranked as the #4 Liberal Arts College in the 2016 US News and World Report) where I graduated Phi Beta Kappa to New York University, where I received my MFA.
The great teachers helped me see the connections between the subjects I was studying and the things in life that I was already interested in. This made learning effortless. Not easy, by any means, but a pursuit that I engaged in with pleasure. This had what is known in economics as "the multiplier effect." Subjects and interests connecting led to wider interests and the pursuit of learning in wider and wider varieties of subjects. I want to share that experience and help students use their innate intelligence to not only achieve academically but to value those achievements.
I am a voracious reader, with a vast knowledge of world literature. As a writer in my non-tutoring life I can help students understand how authors make decisions and create texts. Then subsequently we can work on honing their ability to express their own opinions and observations.
As a parent of an LAUSD student, I am intimately familiar with the Common Core Standards. I am also familiar with the VAPA Standards for Arts Education.
I was an honors History Major at Middlebury College specializing in American History. America's history and its political evolution are probably my greatest subject strengths.
I was an honors Theater Major at Middlebury College. I also received my MFA in Acting from NYU. I have worked in the theater and entertainment industry for over a decade.
I hope we can get together and tackle whatever subjects or areas are giving you trouble. I hope I can help you see that it doesn't have to be a chore. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was a theater major at Middlebury College and then received my MFA in Acting from NYU's Graduate Acting Program. I have worked in the theater for over a decade including Broadway, Off-Broadway and Tony-Winning Regional Theaters. I was the Assistant Theater Games Teacher at NYU for 3 years and was recently one of 16 selected participants in the Actors Fund's "Teaching Artist Intensive" with LAUSD Arts Community Network Manager, Leonardo Bravo.
