About Rachel

Hi there! I'm Rachel, a tutor with six years of experience working with students privately, at Kumon Learning Center, Sylvan Learning Center, and in the classroom. I have worked as an early learning and language arts assistant with four Kumon Learning Centers in New Jersey, Brooklyn, and Manhattan, where I was the lead early learning instructor for children ages 2 1/2 to 13 in Chinatown. In Chinatown, I oversaw approximately thirty early learners in math, reading, and pencil skills. I also authored our center's early learning training manual for new center employees! My years of experience with the Kumon Method add discipline and focus to how I teach math and pre-reading skills. In fact, I have designed my own math worksheets (inspired by the Kumon method) for my own private students.

As a private tutor, I have worked with students of all ages in a variety of subjects, particularly math and reading. I also have experience preparing students for standardized tests, namely the NJASK Grade 6, GED, and New York Regents Exams (Mathematics). Additionally, I am familiar with AP exam preparation for the following subjects: Calculus AB/BC, English Literature and Composition, US Government and Politics, US History, and Psychology.

I recently graduated from New York University's Gallatin School of Individualized Study, where I earned my bachelor's degree in history, storytelling, and dramatic literature. My final colloquium presentation explored the relationship between storytelling, peace building, and rhetoric. Before deciding to pursue a career in the field of education full time, I worked as a singer and actress in New York City, and worked with many Shakespearean texts closely. My career as an actor adds creativity to my teaching methods, as well as a wealth of knowledge about classical, dramatic, philosophical, and theoretical texts. Here are some of my academic stats:

2012 Honors Graduate of Glen Rock High School (Final GPA- 4.12)
2015 Magna Cum Laude Graduate- NYU Gallatin (Final GPA- 3.9)
NYU Founder's Day Award Recipient
Horatio Alger New Jersey State Scholar
Recipient of high AP examination and SAT scores.

In June 2016, I relocated to Los Angeles all the way from New York! During the 2016/17 school year, I am working with City Year/AmeriCorps at Virgil Middle School in Koreatown. At City Year, I am a full-time tutor, mentor, and role model for my class of 35 eighth graders. I provide academic and behavior coaching in the classroom, attendance monitoring, and after school tutoring and enrichment. Our main goal as an organization is to provide additional Tier 2 support to our students, in an effort to close the achievement gap prevalent in our schools, stop the school-to-prison pipeline, and reduce the high school drop-out rate. I am so excited to begin offering my services in the area, and hope to help a lot of students reach their academic and personal goals with confidence and excellence!

Elementary Math Qualifications
My six years with the Kumon Method have provided me with a wealth of experience working with elementary math students (in line with the Common Core mathematics standards). I also have approximately six years of private tutoring experience with students in grades 1-12. I have designed my own math drills/worksheets (inspired by the Kumon Method) for students in grade one, which emphasize number sense (through 120) and operations. I like to incorporate these drills into my lessons to strengthen number sense, speed, and confidence. I plan to expand these drill sheets in the near future, in order to accommodate older and younger students. Currently, I teach math at Sylvan Learning Center in Studio City, CA.

Elementary Reading Qualifications.
My six years as a language arts, phonics and pre-reading skills tutor with Kumon add structure to the way I tutor reading with my private students. I am proud to say that I have helped over one hundred children learn to read! Having graduated with a degree focused on textual analysis, rhetoric, and storytelling, I am qualified to teach students about a variety of literature and academic texts. I also currently teach reading and writing at Sylvan Learning Center in Studio City, CA.

I have been working with children at the elementary school level for six years in various capacities. As previously mentioned, I was the lead early learning tutor at Kumon Chinatown. Additionally, I have worked as a music, dance, and acting instructor for K-5 students through a local community theatre (3 years of experience), and volunteer with special needs children in the arts (ages 8 to 12, 2 years of experience).

If you are looking for an academically diverse, energetic, and patient tutor with years of experience, I encourage you to contact me and set up a lesson, and I will respond promptly! I hope to hear from you soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

My educational background, which includes the study of rhetoric as it pertains to Aristotle's writings and its influence on politics and art, qualifies me to tutor students in the academic study of the classics. At NYU Gallatin, my final colloquium presentation (a panel discussion I led with three professors as a graduation requirement) was heavily focused on ancient texts, including works by Aristotle and Plato. I am equipped with knowledge about Ancient Greek history, art, and philosophy from my time at NYU. I am very comfortable speaking and writing about these texts in an academic setting.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have six years of experience as a tutor for elementary students. As an approved elementary reading, math, and science tutor, I am able to provide well-rounded, balanced lessons for K-6 students. Along with my tutoring experience, I have experience working with this age group in a variety of settings, particularly in the arts.

Handwriting

As the lead early learning class assistant at a Learning Center, one of my duties was to assist young students with their pencil and handwriting skills. Because so many of my students were younger than 5 years of age, I worked with many students on correct hand positioning, grip, and basic letter/number writing.

Phonics

My years of working with the Kumon method for early learners have provided me with a solid plan for teaching phonics and pre-reading skills. I have six years of experience teaching the basics of phonics through object/word recognition, phonemic awareness, basic letter sounds, consonant/vowel combination sounds, and blending. I often utilize pictures, flashcards, charts, and tracing to instill pre-reading and phonics skills.
