About Andrew

Thank you for visiting my profile. When you are looking for a tutor, there are a few qualities that I believe are most important to look for. Your tutor should be knowledgeable in your subject, enthusiastic, and driven to teach. He (or she) should be someone who can relate to you, who is patient and friendly, and who is on your side throughout your journey toward improvement.

I strive to be all those things. I take pride in what I do and in the success of my clients.

ESL Students: I specialize in grammar, pronunciation (including accent modification - special pricing available), conversation, reading, writing, and TESL and IELTS preparation.

Linguistics Students: I specialize in Introduction to linguistics, syntax (including GB and MP), phonology, and phonetics

About me:

I have four years of experience tutoring and teaching adult and academic ESL inside and outside of the classroom. I graduated with distinction from California State University, Northridge (CSUN) with a master of arts degree in linguistics. My concentration as a graduate student was in phonetics and phonology. I am an accent modification instructor; if you are serious about changing your accent for the sake of better fluency and clarity, please let me know.

I am passionate about language in general, but English more specifically. Both as an undergraduate and graduate student, I focused much of my work on the grammatical structure and phonology of English. Along with grammar and pronunciation, I can also help with reading, writing, and test prep. In addition, I also tutor introductory linguistics, syntax, and phonetics/phonology.

Currently, I am pursuing a second MA in speech-language pathology and volunteer at a nearby hospital.

Thanks, and best of luck!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have accumulated over four years of experience in ESL tutoring and instruction. My MA work included courses in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) methods and grammar. If you would like to work on your pronunciation, grammar, or you just need a conversation partner, I can help.

Grammar

Grammar is a passion of mine, and I love sharing that passion with others who want or need to learn it. My undergrad work was focused mainly in English linguistics with course subjects including English syntax and morphology (i.e., grammar). My graduate coursework included formal English grammar instruction. I have over four years of experience in ESL tutoring and instruction.

Proofreading

I have an MA in linguistics and developed my writing skills over the course of my education. I have a keen eye for detail and enjoy (yes, enjoy!) careful review of written work. If you need help with polishing a term paper, ensuring that marketing materials are error free, or have a resume and cover letter you'd like reviewed, I can assist you.

I currently work for China-based company that provides academic advisement and proofreading for Chinese students pursuing graduate degrees in English speaking countries.

Speech

I am an accent modification instructor and own my own service. As a graduate student working toward an MA in linguistics, my concentration was in phonetics and phonology (i.e., pronunciation). My courses included Speech Anatomy and Physiology, Advanced Phonology, Articulatory Phonetics, and Acoustic Phonetics. I have three years of experience in pronunciation instruction. I am currently pursuing a master's in speech-language pathology.

TOEFL

I have over four years of experience preparing students for the TOEFL, which includes one year of experience in tutoring and preparing ESL students at California State University, Northridge's Intensive English Program.
