About Diana

Hi! I am an enthusiastic and encouraging teacher and tutor with more than 15 years' experience teaching and tutoring.

I have taught and tutored at the Community College, High School, Middle School, and Elementary (to Pre-Kindergarten) level(s) - meaning that I have broad experience with a variety of levels and subjects.

I am a very successful teacher/tutor (Stanford University graduate), and I can, and WILL, help your learner be a Success in his or her desired subject(s) also!

In addition to being a graduate of Stanford University (which tells you that I am both intelligent and capable), I also am a trained teacher, working successfully as a Credentialed teacher in the Southern California public school system.

I am able to tutor in Math, English Language Arts (ELA), Social Studies, ESL, and Foreign Languages. (I speak, read, and write 5 languages, including Spanish and (Brazilian) Portuguese with near-native fluency, French, and a few others.)

As part of an award-winning California Distinguished School team, I was able to motivate and encourage both students that were struggling academically, behaviorally, or socially -- as well as provide challenging material to highly capable or gifted students.

Those that know me and have seen me with students say that I am a great encourager and motivator, and make all students feel they CAN learn the material! I am able to do that because I myself love to learn, and am able to pass that love for learning to my students.

Additionally, I went into teaching as a profession partially because of my love for young people. That love, and the patience that I have with them, is evident to all those who see us together. My love for children and young people is something those students sense. It is yet another reason why I am able to be successful in tutoring and teaching them.

By the way, I have passed the WyzAnt background check.

I look forward to helping you and/or your student/child in achieving success and learning this year! Request my FREE short phone session where you can get to know me and my abilities, and I can quickly assess your learner's strengths and areas for improvement.

Please start the ball rolling by getting in touch with me!

Discounted rates possible for multiple consecutive hours of tutoring, or multiple learners.

I look forward to helping you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have always loved Math, and, to this day, frequently play Math games in my head because of that!

I have tutored and taught advanced Math including up to Pre-Calculus with individual students. Algebra, in particular, is a favorite of mine because it seems very logical and understandable to me. Of course, I find that my ability to have memorized times tables (multiplication) and division makes it that much easier for me. I will use those same insights into my learning and perfecting my Math skills to help your learner also.

Besides my love for Math in general, I originally majored in Geophysics at Stanford (significant Math excellence needed), where I successfully studied up to and including college-level Calculus. Additionally, before college, I won a "Math and Science" award from Bank of America while in High School, was a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist on the PSAT.

I will be able to impart to your learner a love for Algebra 1 as well as an ability to perhaps understand it and master it to a level that your learner perhaps did not think possible. Please allow me to be of help to you all in a subject I dearly love!

CBEST

I have tutored and taught CBEST material during my more than 15 years of teaching and tutoring. I took (and passed!) the CBEST in order to start my own teaching career! Thus, I am personally very familiar with the subject matter, and the best strategies for passing it.

Elementary (K-6th)

I worked 14 years successfully teaching elementary school in the public school system in Los Angeles area.

I spent 2 years studying in the teaching credential (Multiple subjects) program at Cal State Northridge before then receiving my Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential [Bilingual (English/Spanish)].

I am thoroughly versed, and totally competent, in (teaching) elementary subject matter!

English

As a trained teacher/tutor who is also a native English speaker, I have strong abilities in English.

Before college, I took and passed Advanced Placement (AP) English, and I really enjoy working with students on their English challenges.

As a person who also teaches ESL and speaks, reads, and writes several foreign languages, I am easily able to help students for whom English is a second or third language. I understand many of the common difficulties that such students have in English!

You will find that you learn a lot with my tutoring, and will also walk away feeling encouraged!

ESL/ESOL

I am a trained ESL teacher and tutor with more than 15 years of experience, working with ESL students individually and in groups.

As a native English speaker, I am able to teach you "the real way (American) English is spoken and written."

I also speak, read, and write several other (foreign) languages, which makes me a better ESL tutor. I have had to learn other languages as a second-language learner, and so understand many of the common difficulties that ESL students have in learning English!

You will quickly improve your ESL with my tutoring, and will also walk away feeling encouraged!

Phonics

As a Certified elementary school teacher, much of my instruction time involved helping students (particularly limited-English proficient (LEP) students) with reading, particularly using phonics to teach sounding out a word - from beginning to more advanced vocabulary. In addition, I spent a number of years teaching beginners how to read and the sounds and names of the letters. As well, my ESL teaching had me constantly using phonics to help with learners' difficulty in sounding out a word. In short, wide and knowledgeable use of Phonics has been a staple in my teaching career!

Portuguese

Although I am an American, Portuguese speakers believe I am a native speaker when they hear me communicate! Thus, you will benefit from my fluency in Portuguese AND my being American and a native English speaker!

As a former student of Portuguese myself, I have the perfect background to help any learner to learn Portuguese!

I have experienced learning Portuguese from a book and a teacher, studying it while not being in the country where it is spoken. (I studied (Brazilian) Portuguese for 2 solid years at the college level at Stanford University.)

I then went to Brazil to live and further perfect my Portuguese, studying directly in a Brazilian university in Sao Paulo (Universidade de Sao Paulo), where I spent a full year studying all (academic) subjects directly in the Portuguese language (and becoming fully fluent in all respects).

That experience, along with my strong abilities in foreign languages, has caused me, as I said above, to become fully fluent and confused with a native Portuguese speaker by Brazilians and Portuguese speakers!

Thus, studying with me, you will NOT learn heavily-accented Portuguese causing you to sound like an "estrangeiro/a" (foreigner), but will learn the pure Portuguese accent!

Additionally, because I studied Portuguese in academic settings, I not only speak Portuguese, but also read and write it with near-native fluency.

I look forward to helping you learn, and/or perfect your abilities, in the beautiful Portuguese language. Ate mais! (catch you later!)

Prealgebra

I happen to love Math, and have a strong and successful background of teaching & tutoring from College level to Elementary level Math.

Thus, as I am talented & knowledgeable in not only Pre-Algebra, but what comes BEFORE and AFTER it, I am able to give your learner success and mastery in Math that will lead to ONGOING Math success for him or her!

Spanish

¡Hola! I speak, read, and write Spanish fluently. I worked and trained as a Bilingual (English-Spanish) teacher for more than 14 years, using Spanish as well as English to instruct students and to help and communicate with parents. Many believe I am a native Spanish speaker because of my strong Spanish abilities! (In reality, my first language is English.) I look forward to helping you or your special learner with Spanish also! ¡Hasta pronto!
