About Pedro

Hey there!

I'm Pedro, a professional music composer and film scorer. Although I have made music the focus of my professional life for the past twenty years, starting as a young piano student, I have a wide range of interests in all sorts of areas of academic study.

I hold several degrees and certifications in music, including a B. A. in Music Composition and Film Scoring from Berklee College of Music, a Film Scoring Graduate Certificate from UCLA Extension, and a Desktop Music Production Specialist Certificate from BerkleeMusic.com. I am also finishing a Masters in Music Composition at Universidad Simón Bolívar.

I have worked as a teaching assistant for Dr. Diana Arismendi, and have also been a private piano instructor. Aside from having interned at the Music Collective, part of the Alan Ett Creative Group, I currently volunteer at Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles as a composition teacher and at Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital as a pianist. In addition, I play piano four nights a week at Culver City's Casa Sanchez restaurant.

In addition, I am fluently trilingual (Spanish, English, French).

My other interests and foci have been paleontology, Egyptology, biology, world, US, European, Asian and South American history, continental philosophy, aesthetics, art history, politics, neuroscience, culture, declamation, psychology, arithmetic, phonetics and orthography.

I want to inspire students to enjoy exploring the mysteries of any subject and get them on a lifelong path of learning. Having made this outlook my own personal philosophy, I have been enriched in innumerable ways: making interdisciplinary associations, improving my critical and lateral thinking skills and becoming more proficient in what I do.

If I could describe myself using just one phrase, it would be: "I love learning!"

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Art History

I have been studying the History of Art since I was a child. I specialize in the art of the Ancient World, the Renaissance, and the 20th Century. I am also finishing a Master's in Music Composition.

Among my most studied artists are Kandinsky, Picasso, Malévich, Leonardo da Vinci, Arcimboldo, Armando Reverón, Edward Hopper, El Greco and Velásquez.

My most studied areas include Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, Sumeria, Celtic art, Mesoamerica, China, Peru, India, Japan, Surrealism, Cubism, Impressionism, Symbolism, Op Art, Conceptual Art, Kinetic Art, Hyperrealism, Modernism, Baroque Art, Mannerism and Gothic Art.

Composition (Music)

Composition is my main professional focus. My first piece was premiered at age 16; a work for piano and orchestra. I have written over one hundred works and premiered twelve.

MA Composition, Universidad Simón Bolívar
UCLA Extension Film Scoring Certificate
BA Composition and Film Scoring, Berklee College of Music
BerkleeMusic.com Specialist Desktop Production Certificate

NB Academia is neither my basis nor ideal when it comes to composition, but I went through it because I thought that to be a composer I had to do so at the time. I have reevaluated my position since then but still have the certifications.

European History

The bulk of my historical focus in school was European history. In particular, I am very familiar with the histories of France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy and Greece.

French

My high school, Le Lycée Français de Caracas, was French; I hold a Baccalauréat L.

Music History

I studied Music History while in the Escuela Nacional de Música Juan José Landaeta as a child, and explored it further since then, both in college and in my personal time.

I specialize in the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical periods, as well as in Ragtime; some of my reference texts include Bukofzer's "Music in the Baroque Era", Zarlino's "The Art of Counterpoint", the Norton Anthology of Western Music and Berlin's "Ragtime: A Musical and Cultural History".

My graduate paper focused on Stravinsky's "Piano-Rag Music", and aimed to point out all the ragtime elements Stravinsky used or reinterpreted in his piece. It is in the process of publication.

Music Theory

Music composition is my main professional focus. My first piece was premiered at age 16; a work for piano and orchestra. I have written over one hundred works and premiered twelve.

Piano

The piano is my main instrument, and my first musical discipline. I have been playing it for twenty four years.

Spanish

Spanish is the first language I learned to speak. I speak and write it fluently, and understand the nuances of several dialects.
