About Joel

Hi there,

I love hanging out with students who want to learn and get better in their subjects. I have over 20 years of teaching experience. I've taught large groups and I've taught one-on-one students. My students have ranged from elementary to adult. I like people, so no matter the age, I seem to relate well. My students seem to have fun in my classes. As a teacher I love the joy I get from seeing my students "get it." I also love learning from my students.

Currently I teach ESL (English as a Second Language), history, geography, government, English, American Culture and Spanish. I have TESOL certification. My specialties are language arts (Writing, Pronunciation, Grammar, Reading, Listening Skills and Dramatic Arts).

My educational background consists of four bachelor's degrees: 1. Communication, 2. History, 3. Spanish and 4. International Communication. I have one master's degree in History.

I have traveled a lot of the world. I've been to Europe, Asia, Latin America, Africa and I've lived in Spain, China and Taiwan. This experience and the fact that I've grown up in the cultural melting pot of California, has broadened my cultural appreciation and awareness. I am sensitive and appreciative of cultural and language challenges.

I look forward to a fun and productive relationship with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have a B.A. and an M.A. in history. I have taught history at the high school and the college level.

I have taught anthropology for the last three years to students who are headed into master's programs. Anthropology is a very large subject that entails everything from biological anthropology (race, genetics, etc.) to linguistics and culture of past civilizations. The students that I have had have come from many different societies. Some of their heritages have passed tribal societies and are now very much part of a national society, such as the Europeans or the Americans. Some of my students are still in a tribal mindset, such as the Middle Eastern students or western Chinese. Interesting discussions and understanding, both for the student and the teacher, are gained when working with this diverse group of students. This, coupled with my degrees in history, gives me a strong background for teaching a subject as diverse as anthropology.

Bible Studies

I grew up as a Christian going to church every week. I still continue attending to this day. I am a leader in the church and in our youth group. I believe that being a Christian is more than just a name, but it is something that one must continually learn about. That learning comes from studying the Bible which I try and make a habit of doing.

I went to parochial schools all my life and took Bible classes from elementary through college. I don't know all of the answers, but I know quite a bit and it would be pleasure in helping you through your Bible studies.

With two degrees in history, I have had an opportunity to explore and write on the classic era of history--exploring everything from the ancient Greece of Herodotus, Thucydides, Socrates, Plato and Aristotle to the class Roman period of Seneca and the founding and fall of Rome.

I teach English writing to students entering graduate programs.

I have taught English for over 20 years. I have taught at California Lutheran University, Pepperdine University, College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, CA, and New Bridge University in Los Angeles. I have also taught English in China and Taiwan. When I was in college, I lived in a country where I had to study and learn a foreign language. I understand the difficulties, both culturally and linguistically and the challenges learning a new language is.

I specialize in conversation, American culture and American pronunciation. I have a degree in communication and international communication and possess advanced, business, and children's TESOL certifications as well as a post-secondary vocational certificate from the State of California for ESL.

European History

I have two degrees in history: A bachelor's and a master's. I have lived, studied and traveled Europe. I speak two European languages: English and Spanish. Understanding European history not only helps us understand our own United States' history, but also much of the world's.

Geography might seem to be a boring subject, but it can actually be made to come alive. I have lived and traveled in four continents and I have seen a lot of the geography that this planet has to offer. Having this insight beyond my knowledge allows me to make geography go from a stuffy subject to something that can be fun.

Government & Politics

I have taught government in general and specifically U.S. government for the last three years to students entering their master's programs. Understanding the different types of governments that are in and have been in the world, the U.S. Constitution, how the three branches of government work, the differences between parties in the United States, etc., are all very important in understanding a citizens' rights and understanding how other countries operate.

As an ESL teacher and a writer, grammar has become second nature to me. It is something that most native speakers don't like to focus on, but it can be useful and at times interesting in understanding the English language as well as making connections to other languages.

Phonics is the basis of pronunciation. I have taught American English pronunciation for many years. In fact I have written a book on the subject that is sold and used by teachers and advanced foreign-language students.

I would be happy to help people read through the use of phonics or pronounce through the same use.

As a teacher of English essay and story writing, I have become very adept at the art of proofreading. Proofreading goes beyond finding mistakes, but it also involves using and teaching the symbols that allow a writer to read and make his or her own corrections. This is all part of proofreading.

Public Speaking

I have a degree in Communication and in International Communication. Much of this degree and work that is done in communications is done through public speaking. I have given many prepared and impromptu speeches. I am able to captivate my audience on even the most boring topics. I once had a job where I traveled the country speaking to medical professional about government required regulations--not the most interesting topic. I have many written reviews from attendees who thank me for making it interesting and fun.

I am also trained as an actor. This skill is something that can be taught and is very beneficial when giving public speeches.

As an English teacher to speakers of other languages, it is imperative that I be able to teach reading in the English language. The techniques that are used are universal and are applied to children learning to read as well as to adults.

As a person who is interested in history and culture, I have been drawn to study and observe various religions and the sects within those religions. I have had many students from around the world who have taught me about their culture's religion. I took World Religions when I was in college.

The study of religion is also a study of doctrines and religious literature. I have listened to and at times participated in discussions and debate concerning ethical, moral and doctrinal issues. I was also given the opportunity when I taught at New Bridge University to teach a small course on World Religions.

Social Studies

Social studies is a broad subject that deals with human behavior within societies, but for the average student, it is just a subject that has to be taken to pass elementary school and beyond. With my travel experience and my background in history, I'll be able to make this subject seem much less dry.

Not only do I have a bachelor's degree in Spanish, but I lived and studied in Spain. In fact the purpose of living and studying there was to improve my Spanish. There is no better place to learn a language than in a place where it is spoken in the culture.

As a language teacher, one of my prime jobs is teaching students of all language levels how to spell. English is one of the hardest languages to learn how to spell, whether you are native speaker or a second-language speaker. In many languages, the way the word sounds is the way it is spelled. In English this is not so. So much of English spelling is through memorization, a few tricks and many exceptions.

Study Skills

As a teacher for over 20 years, I have taught many students time-saving and memorization techniques for both general study and for studying specifically for tests.

I have been a professional actor for 20 years. I am a member of three acting guilds: Screen Actors Guild (SAG), American Federation of Radio and Television Artists (AFTRA) and America Equity Association (AEA).

I have taught acting on multiple occasions. I taught stagecraft and the history of theatre at the college level for one year.

I have a degree in communication. I am also a writer, a speaker and I teach English. Words are a very important part of what I do. Believe it or not, people do judge you (for good or for bad) based on the words you use. Increasing your vocabulary can only help you in an English-speaking society.

World History

I have two degrees in history: A bachelor's and a master's. I have lived, studied and traveled Europe, Latin America and Asia. I speak two European languages: English and Spanish. Understanding the world's history allows us to understand what is currently happening in the world.

I am a writer and a teacher of writing. I've taught narrative writing and essay writing. Knowing the difference between argumentative essays or division and classification essays can be very useful with a teacher asks you to compose a certain type. Understanding denotation and connotation when writing stories will only make you a better writer.

Relates well to my teen son.

Joel is able to crack through my son's tough, teen shell and relate to him on his level. My son has not voiced one complaint since Joel started tutoring him which is a big change from the past when we worked with other tutors. Joel has helped him to think about his writing and take pride in it.
