I was a teacher for 34 years, 23 years in the Petaluma School district, Petaluma, California, 3 years in Guinea, West Africa, and one year in Mexico City. I was the, Assistant Head for the Middle School/Academic Dean at the American School Foundation in Mexico City. I taught Language Arts/Social Studies Core at Martin Luther King Middle School, Berkeley, CA. Finally, I ended my career in San Francisco Unified School District as a Reading Specialist and a Special Education teacher.
Over the course of my educational experience, I have received two Master’s degrees, one in Reading and Language, and one in Supervision and Leadership. I also have my Principal Certification with the State of New Jersey.
Education is constantly changing and I believe I have grown with it. I am a learner, reading current literature in the field, giving many workshops, nationally and internationally, written articles on a variety of subjects, listened to others, and reflected on making what I do better. I try to envision a thorough way to get at understanding for all learners. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught Elementary school for over 25 years. I am California Certified and also hold an administrative credential. I particularly enjoy working in the Literature, Reading and Written Language field. I have a Secondary Credential in addition to the Elementary and also a Special Education Credential.

Over 34 years of teaching, I trained in various aspects of reading, including the skill of phonics. It is a critical component of reading, but particularly spelling. For my reading Master thesis, I studied the effect of writing in a community of writers. Furthermore, I was trained with the International Baccalaureate program.

Throughout my teaching career, I organized numerous Speech Contesst. Additionally, I coached many students with speeches, nationally and internationally. One student in Mexico City won the city-wide contest. Furthermore, I was responsible for student preparation of speeches for graduation in a couple of middle schools.
For 37 years I taught students whose needs included organizational management and study skills. I was trained in Time Management and hold three California Credentials, including Special Education. Most credential programs include a study skills component. I address this area with each student to insure success.
