I am a certified teacher who has worked with Fairfax County Public Schools for 17 years, and I have tutored many of those years as well. I recently relocated to California for a new experience and to be with my family. Working with students of all ages is easy for me and my calmness and sense of humor helps get my students motivated. I believe that all children can learn, but you often need to find their unique learning styles and interests in order to help them succeed.
I have had a lot of success with tutoring students one-on-one, especially students who are about to fail a class. Preparing for tests can be a positive experience for a child, especially with my support. Teaching a student how to study is usually not taught in school.
It is important for me to be a lifelong learner, so I try to keep up with best practices. I also have taught teachers for seven years, so I know many strategies, as well as the curriculum. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have taught study skills for over 14 years to children, teachers, and parents,
especially preparing for the state SOL tests. I have taken classes in special strategies like BES (Best Effort Strategies for studying), Kagan Strategies, and Dan Mulligan strategies to name a few. Since I am a life long learning, I am continuously learning new strategies and trying to keep up with the latest research.
