About Kaitlin

I tutored for the past six years at The Tutoring Center in Mountain View whose students are Kindergarten - High School and at West Valley College's Writing Center who have a vast array of students for five years. In fact, I graduated from West Valley with three A.As in English, Women and Gender Studies and Global Communications. I am currently enrolled at Monterey Bay State to get my teaching credential to teach English at a secondary level.

I support students in reading comprehension, the various stages of the writing process, grammar, vocabulary, phonics, speech writing, and the difficulties ESL students have. I am trained to work with students with ADD/ADHD and dyslexia. I have worked with students in Study Skills to help them become organized and learn testing strategies.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have worked as a tutor especially for students with ADD/ADHD. I have been trained to work with these students to redirect their attention to their work, help them set up a plan to get their work completed, and write down steps for them to follow to get things done. I handle what appear to be behavior problems but are actually symptoms of ADD/ADHD according to what the individual student needs. This sometimes means talking to them to redirect their attention or showing little interest in conversation so they will focus back on their work.

College Counseling

I have assisted my peers as a tutor at West Valley Community College with writing their personal statements. I understand that personal statements require a concise description of who you and what you bring to the college community, and I know how to aid someone in writing that way. I have also done my own college applications, and can assist with the tools used to do so, and other tools to see what credits transfer to which college.

Elementary (K-6th)

I work with K - 6 students for the past five years in English and Math. I build curriculum for K - 6 students. In working with this age range, I check in with students to see where their development is at in English and Math, and try different techniques to find the best way to help them learn a concept.

ESL/ESOL

I have worked with many students in reading, writing and speaking as a tutor. I have helped them with spelling and grammar mistakes in their writing. I have also helped them to take what they want to say and teach them how it is said in English. I have also helped them understand vocabulary they come across in reading, and help them choose the right words for their own writing by describing what it means and how it connects to what they are saying.

Phonics

I have tutored at The Tutoring Center for 5 years, and one of the subjects we work on is phonics. I have helped children of varying ages with learning their vowel sounds, how to break up words to read them easily, rhyming, and other needs to support their phonics. I have also helped put together curriculum for students who need help with their phonics.

Proofreading

I have experience editing essays of college students in The Writing Center at West Valley Community College in Saratoga.

Public Speaking

As a student of a Public Speaking Honors class, I know first hand what is required of students to succeed as a good public speaker. I learned different techniques to prepare that I could tutor other public speaking students in. Also, as a tutor at my college, I have already had four years of experience tutoring my peers in outlining their speeches.

Study Skills

I have worked with Study Skills students for the past five years. I know the best place to start with these students is to check to see if they have a clean backpack and a system to keep track of their work, to help them build one if they don't, and keeping on top of grades. I help students build a routine around keeping track of their academics.
