University of Oklahoma- Norman (Mathematics)
I love tutoring mathematics. Tutoring mathematics to unique, gifted or challenged students is what I was born to do. I have been tutoring mathematics since 2011. I have experience tutoring students at all different levels of understanding and can adapt to most learning style or vice versa as needed. I do not tutor any other subject. All of my accumulated hours of tutoring have been in mathematics.
Although a session length is 55 minutes, I work hard to prepare a lesson suited precisely for the situation and am available for support before and after. I will be there every step of he way.
One of my goals is to accumulate over 10,000 hours of documented math tutoring. I am committed to continuing to learn and becoming excellent at what I do. I want to help your student become the best mathematics student they can be.
I also have experience as a calculus and pre-calculus instructor at the University of Oklahoma, and as a tutor in the mathematics lab at Oklahoma City Community College.
My education is in the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics degree from the fantastic University of Oklahoma. The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics program at the University of Oklahoma is very rigorous and demanding and I am proud to be an alumni. I also have a minor in Environmental Studies, and an Associate of Arts degree from Oklahoma City Community College.
Currently, I am available to tutor Pre-Algebra, Algebra(s), Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Business and Engineering Calculus (all in the sequences) Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Logic, Discrete Math, and Introduction to Abstract Algebra.
Introductory Topology / Introduction to Analysis (first semester).
I charge a reduced rate for these courses since it typically takes about three times as long to do the problems.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
I do ask that you let me know the specific topic in your subject 24 hours before your session (if you are in a course).
EXTREME / SEVERE WEATHER:
If there is a severe weather advisory I consider our session automatically cancelled. I will let you know that I will not attend. You will not be assessed a fee for not attending. We will reschedule. Jeffery is probably the best math tutor you'll find at OU. If you don't understand a problem, he'll break it down, showing every step and graph along the way. His vast knowledge of the subject allows him to explain a problem in multiple ways. Every tutor session I've had was extremely helpful. I had another tutor before Jeffery, and the difference is night and day. Simply put, if you need a math tutor, you'd be foolish not to enlist Jeffery's help.
Calculus 1 was a very difficult course for me and since getting Jeffery's help from the start of my calc 2 class I have made significant improvements. I have received an A on all tests so far and have not made below an A on any quiz in the course. He greatly simplifies things, has a great amount of patience, a vast knowledge of the subject, and a clear goal of helping you to excel. I would definitely recommend him to anyone whether you are really struggling or just need a small amount of help.
Jeffery has been tutoring me in Business Calculus II. He has been a huge help and has definitely aided in my comprehension and learning of the material. He is flexible with scheduling and always willing to help in any way possible.
He is very good at breaking down complex mathematical ideas and concepts to a level that is easy to understand. He is patient and will take the time to make sure that you understand what you are learning. I highly recommend him.
Jeffery has been a great tutor for my Business Calc. 1 class. He has worked me through every problem I have given him step by step. He is very good at helping me understand the problems. I believe my test scores have risen thanks to his help. Easy to reach and flexible, always ready to help.
Mr. Jeffery D is a great tutor that will help you improve math skill in just one session. I had 5 days to improve my test scores in math. With Jeffery's super flexible schedule and helpfulness, I improved 17 points on my second exam from the first exam, and plan to improve even more on the next. He is very patient and is able to teach any kind of learner, whether it be visual or hands on. Very personable and will always give you the time you need to improve, whether it be on homework, quiz, exam, or even final exams. Essential to college students who are struggling with big math classes and have no hands on individual learning with a teacher. Definitely will be continuing to be a student for Jeffery throughout my college career.
My son seems very please with his sessions. I trust Jeffery with my son's temperament. I wish Jeffery tutored English also!
If you need a good differential equations tutor then you should definitely get Jeffery. He doesn't rush you and makes sure you know the basics if you don't understand completely. He will go at your PACE and does not move on to the next problem until you understand it. He also makes sure you can explain what kind of problem you're working on and how and why did you came up with an answer. He shows different approaches to a problem and short cuts if it applies to the problem. He asks possible exam questions and helps you come up with a good answer if you're not sure about the question. He has good suggestions and pointers if you get stuck on a exam. He encourages you to ask many questions and there are no dumb questions. He doesn't make you feel ashamed if you don't know a theorem or formula. He will help you if you have finance problems. He is here to HELP you do whatever you need to do to make an A in the class. YOU HAVE TO BE PREPARED TO WORK HARD!!!!!!!!
Super helpful and understanding. Easy to correspond with and get a hold of. Has flexible schedule and cares most about helping his students. He tutored me before a linear algebra test and really helped to clear up my questions. Would recommend to anyone!
Jeffery is very helpful and great at explaining different math concepts to me! He has helped me make A's on all my tests since I have started with him, and homework has become much easier and understandable! Before, I was making C's on my tests and struggling with homework every night. He is flexible and easy to reach. I would highly recommend him!
Emily contacted me recently to let me know that she received a 4 on her AP calculus exam!
Jeffery is a great tutor. He's very patient and makes you think through each problem you're up against. I'd recommend him whether you're studying for an upcoming exam or just trying to get ahead.
I have had several tutors to help me understand algebra, but none have been a good fit. Today, for the first time, I felt that the tutor (Jeffery) understood what my needs are and can help me get past my self imposed blocks. I left the tutoring session knowing that I can learn algebra and that Jeffery will be the one to help me get there. He is a wonderful tutor, and very quick in identifying what method of learning is needed for me to be successful.
Today I had my second meeting with Jeffery. He helped me work through word problems in a way that took the fear out of it for me. I'm really happy and relieved that I FINALLY have a tutor that can zone in on my learning style and ability.
Jeffery has been a wonderful algebra tutor for my son who is a junior in high school. I believe my son's understanding of algebra has improved significantly. I really appreciated that anytime we contacted Jeffery to set up a tutoring session he was usually able to fit us into his schedule within a couple of days. Here is what my son had to say about Jeffery:
"Jeffery has been an immensely helpful algebra tutor to me. He explains things in a logical step-by-step manner and helps me see not just how to solve problems, but why they are solved that way. He was able to recognize my style and pace of learning and fully adjusted his pace of teaching to match that. Thanks to Jeffery I passed my class (algebra 3) with an A and the concepts that used to always trip me up now seem easy."
As a college student, I found myself in need of a fantastic tutor to help me prepare for a math CLEP exam. It's been years since I was in a math class, but after leaving my first session, I felt completely confident in my ability to pass this exam and continue my math curriculum. Jeffery is an extremely competent, capable tutor with experience and, most importantly, remarkable knowledge. I would, without a doubt, highly recommend this tutor.
Feel very fortunate to have found Jeffery D. for our son at OU. He is being tutored by Jeffery in Pre-Calc and feels very comfortable with Jeffery. He said Jeffery is patient and easy to understand vs how he is taught in class. We plan to use Jeffery weekly for the entire semester. It makes the world of difference when you find a tutor that clicks with you!
Jeffery D. tutored our son at OU for one semester (Pre-Calc)and our son was struggling to pass the class. Jeffery D. was an excellent tutor and helped tremendously. Our son passed the class and we were very pleased with the grade he achieved with the help of Jeffery. We will definitely use Jeffery going forward. We would recommend him to anyone. Very very good!
Jeffery has been helping our son for the last few months and we have seen a amazing boost in his confidence with his AP Calc. Thank you Jeffery.
Jeffery was very patient with my grandson. He did learn algebra concepts and didn't complain about having a tutor which is an improvement from the past tutoring experiences we have had. I think the way Jeffery related to my grandson will make him comfortable enough to pursue an understanding of algebra.
My son is new to Algebra and has been thrown into Algebra 1 at High School and was getting really stressed. Jeffery has been fantastic. He's extremely patient, has a wonderful way of explaining the subject and has instilled the confidence in my son to believe he can succeed. He's now passing Algebra 1! Many thanks Jeffery!
My time with Jeffery was very beneficial. He helped me understand multiple concepts in little time. I thought he was able to show me a lot of material in simpler form. I wasn't confident in what I was doing and he encouraged me throughout the whole process to just be confident in what you're doing and it'll be easier.
I have only met with him once and I already know that he is going to be an incredible help with my math class this semester! He is very knowledgable, patient, and great at explaining things. I highly recommend him!
Jeffery is a really great tutor, very positive attitude, no old fashion tutoring. He is patient, and his creative problem solving access is amazing. Good with explaining things in way that is comprehensible even for those who haven't been doing math in a years like in my case. He makes it look like a fun game, there is no pressure feeling. I was really lucky to choose him for a math tutor.
Thank you, Jeffery!
Jeffery was very helpful. If I didn't understand something he would go over it until I would get it. He also explained everything in terms that I would understand. He is very punctual and helpful. I will definitely be using him for the rest of math course!
Jeffery helped my daughter through some algebra problems with a gentle, helpful, and honest manner. We'll definitely be turning to him again next time she needs help!
Today, I had a very educational session with Jeff regarding unit circles and radians. He was EXTREMELY patient, kind, and helpful. He never tired of repeating the questions or helping me derive the answers - regardless of how slow I might have been. I highly recommend Jeff as a tutor if you are looking for a well round education on the subject at hand. FIVE STARS all around! Thanks, Jeff!
Jeffery helped my son with his pre-calculus class at the University of Oklahoma. My son said that by the end of their sessions he was definitely more confident in his understanding of the material. Jeffery was reliable and affordable. I would definitely recommend him.
Jeffery was always very punctual and patient! He always took the time to make sure I understood whatever the subject was, completely. Very clear and easy to understand. I'm pleased to have had him as a tutor.
I had Jeffery tutor me in Calculus. He was amazing! He explained different functions well and helped me check my own work. He was very prepared and professional. I would highly recommend him to anyone! I got a 99% on my test thanks to his tutoring skills
I've worked with Jeffery twice now, and both times he has been punctual, prepared, professional, and knowledgeable. I gave him the topics I was struggling with ahead of time, and he arrived with examples and methods already ready to go. He's appropriately colloquial, making it very easy to understand the concepts. Definitely would suggest him for others struggling with Calc 2.
According to my daughter, Jeffery explained the material in terms she could understand.
He was very professional and we will continue to use his service.
This was a great tutor for my daughter, I would recommend him to everyone! He was easy to reach by phone and could meet us easily.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Algebra 1 is the beginning of your journey into the world of mathematics. You will learn about "x." Where is that "x," and why is it always lost? Algebra 1 is like solving miniature puzzles. Each puzzle comes with its own rules. Studying Algebra 1 helps you learn the rules that are the foundation of high school and college mathematics.
Continuing from Algebra 1, the basic fundamentals of Algebra will be used throughout your mathematical career. Functions, graphs, factoring, and previews of linear algebra, set theory, and discrete mathematics can be found in most Algebra 2 books. Also, a bit of trig. You will want to master these skills if you plan on continuing to Trigonometry, Pre-Calc, and Calculus.
I have experience tutoring AP Calculus AB/BC, Business Calculus 1&2, and Engineering Calculus 1-4 and 1-3 at the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City Community College, University of Central Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University and Rose State. I have also taught two first semester courses in Calculus and Analytical Geometry with Logic. I am familiar with many syllabi and professors.
Calculus is an amazing collaboration of many brilliant mathematicians. It begins by solving the "tangent problem," by introducing the concept of the limit in differential calculus, and continues to solve the "area problem," in integral calculus. In Calculus 3, we learn about different coordinate systems, infinite series, we stop briefly to inspect conic sections and their properties and move on to vector functions in the plane and in space. I can tutor Calculus 1, 2, and 3.
I have been tutoring Ordinary Differential Equations for several years now at the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City Community College, University of Central Oklahoma, Rose State and Oklahoma State University. I am familiar with many syllabi and professors.
Differential Equations have various methods for which they can be solved. It is all a matter of learning to recognize what type of expression we have, and from there, the problem points us in the right direction. I have tutored analytic, geometric, and numerical methods of finding solutions. I have studied differential equations as a required course for my mathematics degree at the University of Oklahoma. Tutoring differential equations requires that we solve lots of problems!
Discrete Mathematics is a first step into the world of advanced mathematics. In tutoring this course, I use a variety of different approaches in order to familiarize you with the ever elusive idea of writing proofs, understanding propositional logic, set theory and counting.
In pursuing my degree in mathematics at the University of Oklahoma I have studied Linear Algebra (3333) as a required course. I have also read the subject and attended many online lectures on my own.
My qualifications in mathematics and experience tutoring allow me to tutor logic, one of my favorite subjects. Tutoring logic allows me to teach my students to think analytically. The methods I utilize are constructing truth tales, Venn diagrams and argument analysis. I have a degree in Diversified Studies and am currently pursuing a degree in Mathematics at the University of Oklahoma.
Pre-Algebra is where the ground work is laid. We talk about inverse operations. We talk about doing things to "both sides" of the equation. We are introduced to the rectangular coordinate system. It is foreign at first, but most important.
PreCalculus is a further review of algebra that is sometimes (usually) bolstered with trigonometry. In PreCalculus, we learn more about functions, the log, e, trigonometric functions, simplifying expressions and factoring, sequences, series, and the beginnings Calculus 1, namely limits. You will learn all about the life of functions. You will learn how to transform them, how to reflect them, and how to calculate their rates of change. These are important concepts for Calculus 1.
Trigonometry is also a favorite of mine. It is really mind blowing how beautiful it is. In trigonometry we learn about periodic functions and derive how they come about on the unit circle. We then learn how to take the trig functions and make them applicable off of the unit circle. We learn about the inverse trig functions and derive the laws of sines and cosines. We will see the law of cosines again in the dot product when we play with vectors in Calculus. While most Trig courses don't require it, it is not a bad idea to take a look at the hyperbolic trig functions while we are here.
