About Kevin

I have 2 years of previous tutoring experience and I enjoy trying to get a student to understand a subject such that they can solve a problem regardless of how it is worded or set-up. Such that the understanding goes beyond what is gained by repetition.

Repetition can be useful of course but without a better basis repetition can be applied incorrectly or recalled incorrectly. Developing expertise often takes trying to approach a problem from multiple angles or coming back to a problem after looking at other examples in order for the student to really "get it." I think once this happens subjects are much less difficult and more enjoyable to learn as it builds confidence. To make this happen I focus on collaborating with the student, giving them time to process, ask question and work through theories of how they think something works and offer insights as they do this. I want them to think critically, make mistakes and keep trying to thoroughly understand their subject.

What tutoring provides is what is lacking typically in a class environment which is for a student to explain how they think something works. Learning is actually a creative process of digesting information and translating it to knowledge which can be applied to other problems.

If a student does not "get" something there is a reason for that which has to be understood. I work hard to get at what does not make sense and ask them questions to think about the basis of their current understanding and what aspect of that understanding is not correct and why. This is often about building the confidence to ask the questions necessary to make sense of a subject. I have seen this approach work in advanced math, chemistry and engineering courses.

I have a degree in chemical engineering and math, chemistry and physics are all core subjects necessary to solve advanced engineering problems. My passion for these subjects is what lead me to pursue a career in engineering. My goal is for students to show major improvement by helping them to enjoy becoming masters of a subject.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

ACT Math is fun and I enjoy helping students to develop multiple tools to solve problems even if they don't understand how to directly solve the problem. Using elimination to get rid of answers that could not be right for instance. Speed is really the key in making it through this test and understanding what pace is acceptable.

ACT Science

By working through examples and helping students to read what is there and not infer what is not there is key to this section. As is carefully reading the questions such that foolish mistakes are not made. Looking for key words, understanding the examples and learning to read the section quickly but carefully are important for doing well in this section.

Algebra 2

I have taken and tutor advanced math courses. Right now most of my students are in high school algebra 2 so I have a great deal of experience explaining how to solve these problems.

Calculus

I had calculus in college and went on to apply it to solve engineering problems. I have a degree in chemical engineering. I tutored my classmates when I took the course in undergrad. I enjoy helping people to understand this useful and interesting subject.

Prealgebra

I have been tutoring math and chemistry for 6th months and use math regularly to compre loans etc.

SAT Math

As with all these standardized tests I like to work off of a problem book that we can get at the library. I like to get the student to understand the section, how it is scored and how quickly they are expected to solve problems. When first solving problems I want them to understand the various types of problems they will see and work through many examples. We can speed up as understanding is gained as well as learn how to eliminate answers that do not make sense.

He really helped my son with ACT prep

Kevin was able to help us out with a last minute request to prepare with my son's weak areas for the ACT. He helped my son with precalc, algebra II and science. My son felt. Lit better going into his test
