About Shahin

If you're here, first I want to say I'm so happy you've decided to take on the task of learning to play piano. I believe that music is a gift that, as the great J.S. Bach said, "Refreshes the spirit". It edifies the mind and provides endless wonder to those who experience it.

I've taught piano for eight years to students as young as four and as old as sixty-three with schools such as the Riko Method School of Piano, the USC Thornton School of Music, and most recently as an independent teacher. My approach to teaching is to keep it simple and fun. Learning piano certainly requires practice, but it shouldn't be so much of a struggle as to be discouraging. My favorite part of teaching are the moments when students faces light up because they've overcome an obstacle, and I love helping them to feel know empowered.

From the very first lesson, my students begin to develop critical-thinking, multitasking, and discipline skills which are not only essential to learning piano, but which also apply to many other aspects of a person's life. Through games, playing music, and regular written homework, even the least experienced student quickly develops the skills to begin playing. My goal with each of my students is to give them the skills to be able to learn any song on their own, whether it be classical, pop, or any other genre of music. Though my primary focus is classical, I've also taught pop, blues, jazz, and other genres of music.

I graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance at USC. I currently serve as the pianist for the LA Metropolitan Opera, and I also write music in a band called Mosaic. I also volunteer with Music to Inspire, a non-profit foundation which gives classical concerts and lectures to schools around Los Angeles, teaching the importance of music and correct practicing.

Thanks for your interest in learning piano and happy music-making!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

In 2012, I graduated from the USC Thornton School of Music with a BM in Piano Performance and Theory. I've also worked as a transcriber for various film composers in Los Angeles, copying out scores based on audio recordings and arranging music for different ensembles. I incorporate ear-training elements such as interval recognition, chord recognition, and music transcription into my teaching method.

General Music

Besides my primary instrument of piano, I also play the guitar and bass guitar. I've composed music for dozens of short films, and I'm currently writing and performing in a band called Mosaic.

I graduated from the USC Thornton School of Music with a BM in Piano Performance and Theory. Since then I've worked with a variety of professional musicians and composers, from flute players to drummers, in genres as wide ranging as classical, pop, and hard rock.
